WHATEVER WE MAY THINK
Whatever we may think of Lot's behaviour in "lifting up his eyes" (v.10), "choosing him all the plain of Jordan" (v.11) and finally "pitching his tent toward Sodom" (v.12), 2 Peter 2:8 reminds us that " he vexed his righteous soul from day to day with their unlawful deeds"
Lot was not sinless, but he put his trust in God & His ways, so that his soul was "vexed" or "distressed". If we are not similarly "vexed" by the activities of the world around us, it is just a matter of time before we become insensitive to their sinful ways. Let us take head to Lot's example and be "vexed" daily as we stand up for the truth in the world around us.

The promise of the land to Abraham's seed is not as clear in the Hebrew and English as it is in the Greek. In the Septuagint the word for seed in Gen 12:7 is the same word as in Galatians 3:16: σπέρματί (spermati). Every time the land is promised to Abraham in Genesis, the same singular word spermati is used. The land has not been promised to all of Abraham's many descendants! It is only for the one special seed, the Lord Jesus Christ!

Gen 13:9-12 When the time came for Abraham to separate from his kindred (Gen 12:1) he gave Lot the opportunity to choose the direction he would go. Lot chose the well watered plain of Jordon and unwisely chose to live in the cities of the plain (Gen 13:12).
In an act of faith Abraham trusted that the LORD would work in the circumstances to guide him. So with the eye of faith he was prepared to let Lot choose his direction of travel and he would go on the opposite direction. Abraham was looking a city whose builder and maker is God (Heb 11:10). When we have problems in life do we remember to place our trust in God that He will work in our circumstances to bring us to His Kingdom? “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Romans 8:28.

SIMPLE, YET PROFOUND
The LORD said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west. All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring FOREVER.” (Gen 13:14-15)
Follow the logic.
1. Abram and his descendants were promised the LAND of Canaan (Israel)... He was NOT promised heaven.
2. Abram and his descendants were promised the land FOREVER.
3. For Abram and his descendants to inherit the land FOREVER, they must live FOREVER.
4. Abram died, never having inherited the LAND. (Acts 7:5)
5. Conclusion: Because it is impossible for God to lie, Abram and his descendants must be resurrected from the dust of death in the future. They must then live FOREVER in order to inherit the LAND of FOREVER.
6. Becoming a descendant of Abram, one needs to have the same FAITH as Abram. Believing what God promised He would do - WILL come to pass!
“Understand, then, that those who have faith are children of Abraham. Scripture foresaw that God would justify the Gentiles by faith, and announced the GOSPEL in advance to Abraham: “All nations will be blessed through you.””
(Gal 3:7-8)
So, the question is:
How do we become descendants of Abraham?
And the answer is: By believing what Abraham believed AND being baptized in Jesus Christ!
“All of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Gentile, neither slave nor free, nor is there male and female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise.” (Gal 3:27-29)
So simple. Yet so profound.

13:5 Lot also had flocks and herds and tents
Ironically, the cause for the parting of Lot and Abram was the abundance of livestock competing for pasture - yet we never find Lot or his family and their spouses being livestock owners again, after the separation. He chose the area around Sodom for its good pasture. Now the pasture is no longer relevant. The reason for the strife seems to have disappeared, but the separation was permanent. Lot and his family were now urbanites.
Bruce Bates [Forbes Australia] Comment added in 2024 Reply to Bruce
13:7 the Canaanites and the Perizzites were dwelling in the land
The Canaanites and the Perizzites either owned or leased the pastoral land. This meant that Abram and Lot, who owned no land, had to negotiate leases with them for their enlarged herds and flocks. The land was still recovering from drought so good pasture would have been scarce and expensive to lease. Hence Lot and Abram's flocks could not readily expand into more pasture. Similarly, the Jordan plain would have needed to be leased from its owners and Lot would have needed to negotiate high prices for its premium pasture.
Negotiating with the Jordan Plain owners meant that Lot needed to interact with the Sodomites and eventually he seems to have given up being a pastoralist and obtained urban employment.
But Abram, too, had a similar problem - he had to negotiate, interact and live alongside a people and a culture that were steeped in idolatry. Abram maintained cultural separation even though physically he lived among the Canaanites and the Perizzites; Lot did not maintain cultural separation when he lived among the Sodomites. Perhaps he thought that he could change them by being influential among them. Lot even called them "brothers" (Genesis 19:7). Instead he lost everything, including his family. Cultural separation is critical. When we come home after work each day, we need to physically and culturally, close the entrance gate to our property from the world and make our homes cameos of the Kingdom.

13:4 And there Abram called on the name of the LORD"
There seems a contradiction between
Genesis 13:4 "Abram called on the name of the LORD" and
Exodus 6:3 "I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name, Yahweh I did not make myself known to them"
Problem: God declares that He was not known by the name of Yahweh to Abraham, Isaac and Israel but by the name of El Shaddai only (Exodus 6:3). Yet God was known to the fathers by the name of Yahweh (Genesis 22:14 and elsewhere). So how is this problem resolved?
Response: The fathers knew that God was called Yahweh but did not know Yahweh in the demonstrable way that the Hebrews of Exodus were soon to discover. The name Yahweh – “He will be whom He will be” - contains the idea of large-scale, highly graphic deliverance by God who is unfettered in His power. God’s name of Yahweh can be paraphrased “He [God] will be as He chooses to behave” – that is, God declares, “I can do whatever I want to do, with unlimited power, and at a time, and to an extent, of my own choosing”. This was attested by the miracles surrounding the exodus of the Jews from Egypt. The nature and extent of these interventions by God in Egypt were unprecedented in the lives of the fathers. Notice the repetition "I will" in Exodus 6:6-8 and the declaration to Pharaoh that through the plagues "you will know that there is none like me in all the earth" (Exodus 9:14) and to Israel "signs that I have done among them that you may know that I am Yahweh" (Exodus 10:3).
Thus, the demonstration of the meaning of God’s name of Yahweh was unobserved (unknown) by the fathers but about to be observed (known) to the captive Hebrews. By contrast, God pointedly demonstrated Himself to the fathers through the name El Shaddai (which expresses the ideas of fruitfulness and power) rather than the name Yahweh even though He had been called by the name Yahweh.

13:14-17 The Lord said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, “Lift up your eyes and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward, for all the land that you see I will give to you and to your offspring forever. I will make your offspring as the dust of the earth, so that if one can count the dust of the earth, your offspring also can be counted. Arise, walk through the length and the breadth of the land, for I will give it to you.”
Notice the background to these promises to Abram:
1. The ecclesia had split - amicably after some tension between Abram's herdsmen and Lot's herdsmen, but irrevocably
2. The Canaanite and the Perizzite owned and occupied the land in the highlands. The Sodomites owned and occupied the land in the east at the Jordan valley. Abram owned no land.
3. Idolatry and wickedness were rampant
4. Violence and violent threats were ever present - Abram needed to give military training to at least 318 of his servants (Genesis 14:14) while entering into defence alliances with neighbours (Genesis 14:13). Bullying kingdoms extracted tribute from neighbouring kingdoms(Genesis 14:4)
5. Abram was childless, getting older, and his wife Sarai was barren
The situation looked hopeless.
Now look at the promises to Abram:
1. Abram would own and occupy ALL of the land including the Jordan Valley in the east
2. Abram's offspring would own and occupy ALL of the land
3. Abram's offspring would be innumerable suggesting that the land would become more fertile that it could sustain so many people and that all other occupants would be gone
4. Abram was to have at least one child so that descendants could occur.
Lesson: God can turn around hopeless situations.

14:15 And he divided his forces against them by night, he and his servants, and defeated them and pursued them to Hobah, north of Damascus.
Abram's entry on the international stage was hugely blessed by God (Genesis 14:20). Abram and his forces were the dominant power in the aftermath, with the King of Sodom seeing the need to do a deal with Abram. Abram could have extracted some payback - land, tribute and so on. Abram chose not to exercise these victor's prerogatives. He also did not force the promises that God had given him to dominate the land - now was still not the right time or circumstance. He returned to relative obscurity. Sadly, Lot returned to Sodom, not realising that now would have been an excellent time to make a break from Sodom. Disaster ensued for Lot.
Lessons:
1. We don't force events to fulfil God's promises - we wait on God even if that means a return to obscurity.
2. Be cautious of accepting worldly honours and gifts. Abram knew that he would be beholden to the King of Sodom if he accepted his possessions and the victory by God would be tarnished by mammon.
3. As opportunity allows, extricate yourself from worldly connections that destroy spirituality.

14:18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine. (He was priest of God Most High.)
Melchizedek was a true mystery. We know nothing of his ancestry, his date of birth or when he died. We know nothing of the community of believers which he headed. Abram appears to have limited interaction with him and when Abram sought a wife for his son Isaac (Genesis 24), he instructed his servant to not seek a wife from Melchizedek's community of believers, preferring to seek a wife from Abram's ancestors in far away Haran whose spirituality was questionable. It could be that upon Melchizedek's death, the community of which Melchizedek was head, dissolved. Sad.

13:13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked, great sinners against the LORD.
Notice the emphasis: The people of Sodom weren't just sinners, they were "great sinners" and "wicked". And their sin was "against the LORD". This may suggest that they had some prior knowledge of God; OR that their sin was so great that God needed to act, similar to how He acted in Noah's day. As well as sexual sin their sin was indifference to the poor and needy. Ezekiel 16:49,50 "'Now this was the sin of your sister Sodom: She and her daughters were arrogant, overfed and unconcerned; they did not help the poor and needy. They were haughty and did detestable things before me. Therefore I did away with them as you have seen.
This tells us that indifference to other people's suffering is abominable to God.

14:16 [Abraham] brought back his kinsman Lot with his possessions, and the women and the people
Lot should not have returned to Sodom and presumably Abram cautioned Lot against returning to evil Sodom. After all, Lot knew:
1. that Sodom's inhabitants "were wicked, great sinners against the LORD" (Genesis 13:13)
2. that Abram disapproved of the king of Sodom's offer that would, if accepted, make the evil king look respectable and compromise God's preeminence (Genesis 14:23). Lot may have been in attendance when Abram conveyed this message to the king of Sodom (Genesis 14:21 shows that that the "people" were still with Abram. This would have included Lot and his family)
Yet Lot returned to Sodom - he could not extricate himself from its appeal. Tragedy follows.

13:12 [Lot] moved his tent as far as Sodom
Lot lived in Sodom as well as the other neighbouring cities: Genesis 19:29: when God destroyed the cities of the valley, God remembered Abraham and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow when he overthrew the cities in which Lot had lived.
Maybe initially, there were ecclesias in each city due to Lot bringing his entourage with him, and Lot regularly visited and lived in these cities. If true, these ecclesias were all bereft of godliness that they, along with Sodom, were destroyed. Perhaps these ecclesias had closed due to apostasy by the time of the destruction of the cities.
Maybe initially as well, there was an intention by Lot to maintain some ecclesial connections with Abraham through visits but , if it ever happened, it would be made more difficult as Lot and his entourage moved into Sodom and beyond.

14:19 Blessed be Abram by God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth
Notice the emphasis on possessions in Genesis 14:
v11 "So the enemy took all the possessions of Sodom and Gomorrah"
v12 "They also took Lot ... and his possessions"
v16 "Then [Abram] brought back all the possessions"
v19 "Possessor of heaven and earth" (We normally associate God as Creator of heaven and earth but the record wants to emphasise that God not only created but possesses heaven and earth)
v20 "Abram gave him a tenth of everything [that he possessed]"
v21 "Give me the persons but take the goods [possessions]"
v22 "God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth"
v24 "I will take nothing [of the possessions]"
LESSON: Mankind incessantly covets and squabbles over possessions. But Melchizedek reminds us that God possesses everything ("Possessor of heaven and earth") including man. Psalm 50:10,11 "Every beast of the forest is mine, the cattle on a thousand hills. I know all the birds of the hills, and all that moves in the field is mine." Everything we have belongs to God including our very lives - we are stewards of the possessions and life God has given us. We should live our lives as stewards of God's possessions not as deserving (and often self-centred) possessors.

14:22 But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "With raised hand I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth"
Abram was so appalled by the king of Sodom that any benefit conferred by the king onto Abram was rejected - even to the point where Abram swore with an oath to God that he would not accept anything from the king of Sodom! Why? Because Abram did not want to be beholden to the king of Sodom. Abram was beholden only to God.
LESSON: Be careful accepting goods, privileges and honours from the world, other than that which you receive in your normal employment. Some time ago, a brother in the UK was nominated for a knighthood. He politely and discreetly turned down the nomination. He probably felt that it would compromise his separateness form the world and compromise the message of the gospel which he was obliged to teach to a world that hated the gospel.
Bruce Bates [Forbes Australia] Comment added in 2025 Reply to Bruce
14:14 Now when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his three hundred and eighteen trained servants who were born in his own house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.
The fact that Abram could equip 318 "trained" men with weapons suggests that whatever else these men did in their daily lives they also were trained for war. This suggest that Abram's existence in Canaan was fraught with tension - he needed to have trained military personnel to deal with the dangers of coexistence with the Canaanites and had formed alliances with friendlier inhabitants of the land (14:13) presumably as a bulwark against attacks from unfriendly Canaanite groups. Abram did not have an easy life - he owned no land and had difficult relationships with some peoples in the land. He knew that the promises were sure but they were mostly in the future.
Also, it would seem that Abram's only motive for attacking these kings was to free his nephew Lot. Had Lot not become part of Sodom, and therefore not been taken captive, Abram presumably would not have attacked the marauding kings. The freedom of people other than Lot by Abram was a side benefit of freeing Lot. The inhabitants of Sodom who were fellow captives with Lot should have therefore respected Lot rather than later turn against him.

16. And he brought back <7725>(8686) all the goods <7399>, and also brought again <7725>(8689) his brother <251> Lot <3876>, and his goods <7399>, and the women <802> also, and the people <5971>.
17. And the king <4428> of Sodom <5467> went out <3318>(8799) to meet <7125>(8800) him after <310> his return <7725>(8800) from the slaughter <5221>(8687) of Chedorlaomer <3540>, and of the kings <4428> that were with him, at the valley <6010> of Shaveh <7740>, which <1931> is the king's <4428> dale <6010>.
18. And Melchizedek <4442> king <4428> of Salem <8004> brought forth <3318>(8689) bread <3899> and wine <3196>: and he was the priest <3548> of the most high <5945> God <410>.
19. And he blessed <1288>(8762) him, and said <559>(8799), Blessed <1288>(8803) be Abram <87> of the most high <5945> God <410>, possessor <7069>(8802) of heaven <8064> and earth <776>:
20. And blessed <1288>(8803) be the most high <5945> God <410>, which hath delivered <4042>(8765) thine enemies <6862> into thy hand <3027>. And he gave <5414>(8799) him tithes <4643> of all.
21. And the king <4428> of Sodom <5467> said <559>(8799) unto Abram <87>, Give <5414>(8798) me the persons <5315>, and take <3947>(8798) the goods <7399> to thyself.
22. And Abram <87> said <559>(8799) to the king <4428> of Sodom <5467>, I have lift up <7311>(8689) mine hand <3027> unto the LORD <3068>, the most high <5945> God <410>, the possessor <7069>(8802) of heaven <8064> and earth <776>,
23. That I will not <518> take from a thread <2339> even to a shoelatchet <5275> <8288>, and that I will not <518> take <3947>(8799) any thing that is thine, lest thou shouldest say <559>(8799), I have made <6238> <0> Abram <87> rich <6238>(8689):
24. Save <1107> only that which <834> the young men <5288> have eaten <398>(8804), and the portion <2506> of the men <582> which went <1980>(8804) with <854> me, Aner <6063>, Eshcol <812>, and Mamre <4471>; let them <1992> take <3947>(8799) their portion <2506>.
Notes that are not verse specific
The apple (Heb. ishon) refers to the pupil. This is jet black in relation to the shadow which follows in the verse. In other words, being hidden (completely) under the Lord's wing would make the shadow pitch black just like the pupil. Thus, this is a reference to complete security.
The same word for apple is used in Prov. 7:2 where it is talking about the protection of this sensitive apparatus. Apple is translated from the Hebrew word ishon which means little man. As with all small, delicate, and vulnerable things (like a child), protection is paramount. And so, the apple must be protected from any intrusion. It is easy to understand this in a physical application, but it is also meant as a spiritual application. The apple (synonymous with the pupil) lets in light which carries with it the premier source of information. Spiritually useful as well as spiritually damaging instruction both enter through the same portal. The pupil, hence the brain, hence, the heart, hence the spirit, must be protected from harmful influences.

Rich men write their wills and prepare to pass their possessions on to their children (Psa 17:13-15). But, David says, I shall awake. I shall be raised from death. And I shall see God.

1. A Prayer <8605> of David <1732>. Hear <8085>(8798) the right <6664>, O LORD <3068>, attend <7181>(8685) unto my cry <7440>, give ear <238>(8685) unto my prayer <8605>, that goeth not <3808> out of feigned <4820> lips <8193>.
2. Let my sentence <4941> come forth <3318>(8799) from thy presence <6440>; let thine eyes <5869> behold <2372>(8799) the things that are equal <4339>.
3. Thou hast proved <974>(8804) mine heart <3820>; thou hast visited <6485>(8804) me in the night <3915>; thou hast tried <6884>(8804) me, and shalt find <4672>(8799) nothing; I am purposed <2161>(8800) that my mouth <6310> shall not transgress <5674>(8799).
4. Concerning the works <6468> of men <120>, by the word <1697> of thy lips <8193> I have kept <8104>(8804) me from the paths <734> of the destroyer <6530>.
5. Hold up <8551>(8800) my goings <838> in thy paths <4570>, that my footsteps <6471> slip <4131>(8738) not.
6. I have called <7121>(8804) upon thee, for thou wilt hear <6030>(8799) me, O God <410>: incline <5186>(8685) thine ear <241> unto me, and hear <8085>(8798) my speech <565>.
7. Shew thy marvellous <6395>(8685) lovingkindness <2617>, O thou that savest <3467>(8688) by thy right hand <3225> them which put their trust <2620>(8802) in thee from those that rise up <6965>(8693) against them.
8. Keep <8104>(8798) me as the apple <380> of the eye <1323> <5869>, hide <5641>(8686) me under the shadow <6738> of thy wings <3671>,
9. From <6440> the wicked <7563> that <2098> oppress <7703>(8804) me, from my deadly <5315> enemies <341>(8802), who compass me about <5362>(8686).
10. They are inclosed <5462>(8804) in their own fat <2459>: with their mouth <6310> they speak <1696>(8765) proudly <1348>.
11. They have now compassed <5437>(8804) us in our steps <838>: they have set <7896>(8799) their eyes <5869> bowing down <5186>(8800) to the earth <776>;
12. Like <1825> as a lion <738> that is greedy <3700>(8799) of his prey <2963>(8800), and as it were a young lion <3715> lurking <3427>(8802) in secret places <4565>.
13. Arise <6965>(8798), O LORD <3068>, disappoint <6923>(8761) him <6440>, cast him down <3766>(8685): deliver <6403>(8761) my soul <5315> from the wicked <7563>, which is thy sword <2719>:
14. From men <4962> which are thy hand <3027>, O LORD <3068>, from men <4962> of the world <2465>, which have their portion <2506> in this life <2416>, and whose belly <990> thou fillest <4390>(8762) with thy hid <6840> treasure: they are full <7646>(8799) of children <1121>, and leave <3240>(8689) the rest <3499> of their substance to their babes <5768>.
15. As for me, I will behold <2372>(8799) thy face <6440> in righteousness <6664>: I shall be satisfied <7646>(8799), when I awake <6974>(8687), with thy likeness <8544>.

JESUS CAME FOR SINNERS
It sometimes seems as if groups of believers are supposed to be the elite of the world. They look perfect, do what is good, avoid sin and look as if they are living a holy and godly life. In Jesus day the Pharisees looked just like that. People looked up to them thinking that they were the perfect godly people. But in reality Jesus came for another group of people completely. He came for those who are struggling with sin and who are struggling with life. He came to help make you perfect - he did not come for those who are perfect already. He came to help us overcome weakness - not to gather the strong.
The sinless, strong and perfect have no need for Christ. They believe they have already made it (although they do not know how far away they really are). But those of us who are weak and sinful have need of the strength and forgiveness that Jesus came to give. So let us never feel to ashamed, embarrassed, sinful or too bad to meet with Christ. You are just the person Christ came to save.. He came to call sinners just like you and me. Let us accept his call and have the faith to fall on his grace and mercy.

1. And <2532> he entered <1684>(5631) into <1519> a ship <4143>, and passed over <1276>(5656), and <2532> came <2064>(5627) into <1519> his own <2398> city <4172>.
2. And <2532>, behold <2400>(5628), they brought <4374>(5707) to him <846> a man sick of the palsy <3885>, lying <906>(5772) on <1909> a bed <2825>: and <2532> Jesus <2424> seeing <1492>(5631) their <846> faith <4102> said <2036>(5627) unto the sick of the palsy <3885>; Son <5043>, be of good cheer <2293>(5720); thy <4675> sins <266> be forgiven <863>(5769) thee <4671>.
3. And <2532>, behold <2400>(5628), certain <5100> of the scribes <1122> said <2036>(5627) within <1722> themselves <1438>, This <3778> man blasphemeth <987>(5719).
4. And <2532> Jesus <2424> knowing <1492>(5631) their <846> thoughts <1761> said <2036>(5627), Wherefore <2444> think <1760>(5736) ye <5210> evil <4190> in <1722> your <5216> hearts <2588>?
5. For <1063> whether <5101> is <2076>(5748) easier <2123>, to say <2036>(5629), Thy sins <266> be forgiven <863>(5769) thee <4671>; or <2228> to say <2036>(5629), Arise <1453>(5669), and <2532> walk <4043>(5720)?
6. But <1161> that <2443> ye may know <1492>(5762) that <3754> the Son <5207> of man <444> hath <2192>(5719) power <1849> on <1909> earth <1093> to forgive <863>(5721) sins <266>, (then <5119> saith he <3004>(5719) to the sick of the palsy <3885>,) Arise <1453>(5685), take up <142>(5657) thy <4675> bed <2825>, and <2532> go <5217>(5720) unto <1519> thine <4675> house <3624>.
7. And <2532> he arose <1453>(5685), and departed <565>(5627) to <1519> his <848> house <3624>.
8. But <1161> when the multitudes <3793> saw <1492>(5631) it, they marvelled <2296>(5656), and <2532> glorified <1392>(5656) God <2316>, which <3588> had given <1325>(5631) such <5108> power <1849> unto men <444>.
9. And as <2532> Jesus <2424> passed forth <3855>(5723) from thence <1564>, he saw <1492>(5627) a man <444>, named <3004>(5746) Matthew <3156>, sitting <2521>(5740) at <1909> the receipt of custom <5058>: and <2532> he saith <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, Follow <190>(5720) me <3427>. And <2532> he arose <450>(5631), and followed <190>(5656) him <846>.
10. And <2532> it came to pass <1096>(5633), as Jesus <2424> sat at meat <345>(5740) in <1722> the house <3614>, <2532> behold <2400>(5628), many <4183> publicans <5057> and <2532> sinners <268> came <2064>(5631) and sat down <4873>(5711) with him and <2532> his <846> disciples <3101>.
11. And <2532> when the Pharisees <5330> saw <1492>(5631) it, they said <2036>(5627) unto his <846> disciples <3101>, Why <1302> eateth <2068>(5719) your <5216> Master <1320> with <3326> publicans <5057> and <2532> sinners <268>?
12. But <1161> when Jesus <2424> heard <191>(5660) that, he said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, They that be <2192>(5719) whole <2480>(5723) need <5532> not <3756> a physician <2395>, but <235> they that are <2192>(5723) sick <2560>.
13. But <1161> go ye <4198>(5679) and learn <3129>(5628) what <5101> that meaneth <2076>(5748), I will <2309>(5719) have mercy <1656>, and <2532> not <3756> sacrifice <2378>: for <1063> I am <2064> <0> not <3756> come <2064>(5627) to call <2564>(5658) the righteous <1342>, but <235> sinners <268> to <1519> repentance <3341>.
14. Then <5119> came <4334>(5736) to him <846> the disciples <3101> of John <2491>, saying <3004>(5723), Why <1302> do we <2249> and <2532> the Pharisees <5330> fast <3522>(5719) oft <4183>, but <1161> thy <4675> disciples <3101> fast <3522>(5719) not <3756>?
15. And <2532> Jesus <2424> said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, Can <3361> <1410>(5736) the children <5207> of the bridechamber <3567> mourn <3996>(5721), as long as <1909> <3745> the bridegroom <3566> is <2076>(5748) with <3326> them <846>? but <1161> the days <2250> will come <2064>(5695), when <3752> the bridegroom <3566> shall be taken <522>(5686) from <575> them <846>, and <2532> then <5119> shall they fast <3522>(5692).
16. <1161> No man <3762> putteth <1911>(5719) a piece <1915> of new <46> cloth <4470> unto <1909> an old <3820> garment <2440>, for <1063> that which is put in to fill it up <4138> taketh <142>(5719) from <575> the garment <2440>, and <2532> the rent <4978> is made <1096>(5736) worse <5501>.
17. Neither <3761> do men put <906>(5719) new <3501> wine <3631> into <1519> old <3820> bottles <779>: else <1490> the bottles <779> break <4486>(5743), and <2532> the wine <3631> runneth out <1632>(5743), and <2532> the bottles <779> perish <622>(5698): but <235> they put <906>(5719) new <3501> wine <3631> into <1519> new <2537> bottles <779>, and <2532> both <297> are preserved <4933>(5743).
18. While he spake <2980>(5723) these things <5023> unto them <846>, behold <2400>(5628), there came <2064>(5631) a certain ruler <758>, and worshipped <4352>(5707) him <846>, saying <3004>(5723), <3754> My <3450> daughter <2364> is even now <737> dead <5053>(5656): but <235> come <2064>(5631) and lay <2007>(5628) thy <4675> hand <5495> upon <1909> her <846>, and <2532> she shall live <2198>(5695).
19. And <2532> Jesus <2424> arose <1453>(5685), and followed <190>(5656) him, and <2532> so did his <846> disciples <3101>.
20. And <2532>, behold <2400>(5628), a woman <1135>, which was diseased with an issue of blood <131>(5723) twelve <1427> years <2094>, came <4334>(5631) behind <3693> him, and touched <680>(5662) the hem <2899> of his <846> garment <2440>:
21. For <1063> she said <3004>(5707) within <1722> herself <1438>, If <1437> I may <680> <0> but <3440> touch <680>(5672) his <846> garment <2440>, I shall be whole <4982>(5701).
22. But <1161> Jesus <2424> turned him about <1994>(5651), and <2532> when he saw <1492>(5631) her <846>, he said <2036>(5627), Daughter <2364>, be of good comfort <2293>(5720); thy <4675> faith <4102> hath made <4982> <0> thee <4571> whole <4982>(5758). And <2532> the woman <1135> was made whole <4982>(5681) from <575> that <1565> hour <5610>.
23. And <2532> when Jesus <2424> came <2064>(5631) into <1519> the ruler's <758> house <3614>, and <2532> saw <1492>(5631) the minstrels <834> and <2532> the people <3793> making a noise <2350>(5746),
24. He said <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, Give place <402>(5720): for <1063> the maid <2877> is <599> <0> not <3756> dead <599>(5627), but <235> sleepeth <2518>(5719). And <2532> they laughed <2606> <0> him <846> to scorn <2606>(5707).
25. But <1161> when <3753> the people <3793> were put forth <1544>(5681), he went in <1525>(5631), and took <2902>(5656) her <846> by the hand <5495>, and <2532> the maid <2877> arose <1453>(5681).
26. And <2532> the fame <5345> hereof <3778> went abroad <1831>(5627) into <1519> all <3650> that <1565> land <1093>.
27. And <2532> when Jesus <2424> departed <3855>(5723) thence <1564>, two <1417> blind men <5185> followed <190>(5656) him <846>, crying <2896>(5723), and <2532> saying <3004>(5723), Thou Son <5207> of David <1138>, have mercy <1653>(5657) on us <2248>.
28. And <1161> when he was come <2064>(5631) into <1519> the house <3614>, the blind men <5185> came <4334>(5656) to him <846>: and <2532> Jesus <2424> saith <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, Believe ye <4100>(5720) that <3754> I am able <1410>(5736) to do <4160>(5658) this <5124>? They said <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, Yea <3483>, Lord <2962>.
29. Then <5119> touched he <680>(5662) their <846> eyes <3788>, saying <3004>(5723), According <2596> to your <5216> faith <4102> be it <1096>(5676) unto you <5213>.
30. And <2532> their <846> eyes <3788> were opened <455>(5681); and <2532> Jesus <2424> straitly charged <1690>(5662) them <846>, saying <3004>(5723), See <3708>(5720) that no man <3367> know <1097>(5720) it.
31. But <1161> they, when they were departed <1831>(5631), spread abroad <1310> <0> his <846> fame <1310>(5656) in <1722> all <3650> that <1565> country <1093>.
32. As <1161> they went out <1831>(5740), behold <2400>(5628), they brought <4374>(5656) to him <846> a dumb <2974> man <444> possessed with a devil <1139>(5740).
33. And <2532> when the devil <1140> was cast out <1544>(5685), the dumb <2974> spake <2980>(5656): and <2532> the multitudes <3793> marvelled <2296>(5656), saying <3004>(5723), <3754> It was never <3763> so <3779> seen <5316>(5648) in <1722> Israel <2474>.
34. But <1161> the Pharisees <5330> said <3004>(5707), He casteth out <1544>(5719) devils <1140> through <1722> the prince <758> of the devils <1140>.
35. And <2532> Jesus <2424> went about <4013>(5707) all <3956> the cities <4172> and <2532> villages <2968>, teaching <1321>(5723) in <1722> their <846> synagogues <4864>, and <2532> preaching <2784>(5723) the gospel <2098> of the kingdom <932>, and <2532> healing <2323>(5723) every <3956> sickness <3554> and <2532> every <3956> disease <3119> among <1722> the people <2992>.
36. But <1161> when he saw <1492>(5631) the multitudes <3793>, he was moved with compassion <4697>(5675) on <4012> them <846>, because <3754> they fainted <2258>(5713) <1590>(5772), and <2532> were scattered abroad <4496>(5772), as <5616> sheep <4263> having <2192>(5723) no <3361> shepherd <4166>.
37. Then <5119> saith <3004>(5719) he unto his <848> disciples <3101>, The harvest <2326> truly <3303> is plenteous <4183>, but <1161> the labourers <2040> are few <3641>;
38. Pray ye <1189>(5676) therefore <3767> the Lord <2962> of the harvest <2326>, that <3704> he will send forth <1544>(5632) labourers <2040> into <1519> his <848> harvest <2326>.
