GO ALL THE WAY
It is easy to fall into the same trap as Saul when what we want conflicts with what God wants. Saul was given instructions as to what God wanted him to do. It wasn't as if Saul completely rebelled, rather, he just carried out Gods instructions as far as he thought he needed to (or maybe, wanted to). In other words, what Saul did was to water down God's commandments until it suited himself, without completing the work God had given him to do. Then Saul justified himself by giving upright sounding reasons to cover his lack of obedience.
So instead of totally destroying the Amalekites, as he was commanded to do, he saved the best with the excuse that he was going to sacrifice it to God. When Saul's excuse failed to convince Samuel, he made more excuses, blaming his men for his actions.
The lesson for us is that we must do what is completely right - even if we don't like it or think it is needed. Only doing part of what we should is as bad as rebellion. And we can't fool God when it comes to making excuses for our action or lack of action. He knows the real motives of our heart, no matter how fine our excuses might sound. When we obey, let's go the whole way and complete the work God has given us.

1 Sam. 15:35.
"Until the day Samuel died, he (Saul) did not go to see Saul again, though Samuel mourned for him..."
How should we reconcile this passage with this later verse -
1 Sam. 19:24 - "He (Saul) stripped off his robes and also prophesied in Samuel's presence..."?
There may be a very easy way to reconcile these two passages. V. 35 states that Saul did not go to see Samuel until he died. The later passage -
1Sam 19:22-24 - states that Saul asked where Samuel and David were and was told that they were at Naioth in Ramah. Then he went there and received the Holy Spirit and began to prophesy in Samuel's presence. But what is not stated is the reason why he chose to go there. One could naturally assume then that he (Saul) didn't go there for the express purpose of seeing Samuel and visiting him - which, by the way, it doesn't state that he did.

1. Samuel <8050> also said <559>(8799) unto Saul <7586>, The LORD <3068> sent <7971>(8804) me to anoint <4886>(8800) thee to be king <4428> over his people <5971>, over Israel <3478>: now therefore hearken <8085>(8798) thou unto the voice <6963> of the words <1697> of the LORD <3068>.
2. Thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, I remember <6485>(8804) that which Amalek <6002> did <6213>(8804) to Israel <3478>, how he laid <7760>(8804) wait for him in the way <1870>, when he came up <5927>(8800) from Egypt <4714>.
3. Now go <3212>(8798) and smite <5221>(8689) Amalek <6002>, and utterly destroy <2763>(8689) all that they have, and spare <2550>(8799) them not; but slay <4191>(8689) both man <376> and woman <802>, infant <5768> and suckling <3243>(8802), ox <7794> and sheep <7716>, camel <1581> and ass <2543>.
4. And Saul <7586> gathered <8085> <0> the people <5971> together <8085>(8762), and numbered <6485>(8799) them in Telaim <2923>, two hundred <3967> thousand <505> footmen <7273>, and ten <6235> thousand <505> men <376> of Judah <3063>.
5. And Saul <7586> came <935>(8799) to a city <5892> of Amalek <6002>, and laid wait <7378>(8799) <693>(8686) in the valley <5158>.
6. And Saul <7586> said <559>(8799) unto the Kenites <7017>, Go <3212>(8798), depart <5493>(8798), get you down <3381>(8798) from among <8432> the Amalekites <6002>, lest I destroy <622>(8799) you with them: for ye shewed <6213>(8804) kindness <2617> to all the children <1121> of Israel <3478>, when they came up <5927>(8800) out of Egypt <4714>. So the Kenites <7017> departed <5493>(8799) from among <8432> the Amalekites <6003>.
7. And Saul <7586> smote <5221>(8686) the Amalekites <6002> from Havilah <2341> until thou comest <935>(8800) to Shur <7793>, that is over against <6440> Egypt <4714>.
8. And he took <8610>(8799) Agag <90> the king <4428> of the Amalekites <6002> alive <2416>, and utterly destroyed <2763>(8689) all the people <5971> with the edge <6310> of the sword <2719>.
9. But Saul <7586> and the people <5971> spared <2550>(8799) Agag <90>, and the best <4315> of the sheep <6629>, and of the oxen <1241>, and of the fatlings <4932>, and the lambs <3733>, and all that was good <2896>, and would <14>(8804) not utterly destroy <2763>(8687) them: but every thing <4399> that was vile <5240> and refuse <4549>(8738), that they destroyed utterly <2763>(8689).
10. Then came the word <1697> of the LORD <3068> unto Samuel <8050>, saying <559>(8800),
11. It repenteth <5162>(8738) me that I have set up <4427>(8689) Saul <7586> to be king <4428>: for he is turned back <7725>(8804) from following <310> me, and hath not performed <6965>(8689) my commandments <1697>. And it grieved <2734>(8799) Samuel <8050>; and he cried <2199>(8799) unto the LORD <3068> all night <3915>.
12. And when Samuel <8050> rose early <7925>(8686) to meet <7125>(8800) Saul <7586> in the morning <1242>, it was told <5046>(8714) Samuel <8050>, saying <559>(8800), Saul <7586> came <935>(8804) to Carmel <3760>, and, behold, he set him up <5324>(8688) a place <3027>, and is gone about <5437>(8735), and passed on <5674>(8799), and gone down <3381>(8799) to Gilgal <1537>.
13. And Samuel <8050> came <935>(8799) to Saul <7586>: and Saul <7586> said <559>(8799) unto him, Blessed <1288>(8803) be thou of the LORD <3068>: I have performed <6965>(8689) the commandment <1697> of the LORD <3068>.
14. And Samuel <8050> said <559>(8799), What meaneth then this bleating <6963> of the sheep <6629> in mine ears <241>, and the lowing <6963> of the oxen <1241> which I hear <8085>(8802)?
15. And Saul <7586> said <559>(8799), They have brought <935>(8689) them from the Amalekites <6003>: for the people <5971> spared <2550>(8804) the best <4315> of the sheep <6629> and of the oxen <1241>, to sacrifice <2076>(8800) unto the LORD <3068> thy God <430>; and the rest <3498>(8802) we have utterly destroyed <2763>(8689).
16. Then Samuel <8050> said <559>(8799) unto Saul <7586>, Stay <7503>(8685), and I will tell <5046>(8686) thee what the LORD <3068> hath said <1696>(8765) to me this night <3915>. And he said <559>(8799) unto him, Say on <1696>(8761).
17. And Samuel <8050> said <559>(8799), When thou wast little <6996> in thine own sight <5869>, wast thou not made the head <7218> of the tribes <7626> of Israel <3478>, and the LORD <3068> anointed <4886>(8799) thee king <4428> over Israel <3478>?
18. And the LORD <3068> sent <7971>(8799) thee on a journey <1870>, and said <559>(8799), Go <3212>(8798) and utterly destroy <2763>(8689) the sinners <2400> the Amalekites <6002>, and fight <3898>(8738) against them until they be consumed <3615>(8763).
19. Wherefore then didst thou not obey <8085>(8804) the voice <6963> of the LORD <3068>, but didst fly <5860>(8799) upon the spoil <7998>, and didst <6213>(8799) evil <7451> in the sight <5869> of the LORD <3068>?
20. And Saul <7586> said <559>(8799) unto Samuel <8050>, Yea, I have obeyed <8085>(8804) the voice <6963> of the LORD <3068>, and have gone <3212>(8799) the way <1870> which the LORD <3068> sent <7971>(8804) me, and have brought <935>(8686) Agag <90> the king <4428> of Amalek <6002>, and have utterly destroyed <2763>(8689) the Amalekites <6002>.
21. But the people <5971> took <3947>(8799) of the spoil <7998>, sheep <6629> and oxen <1241>, the chief <7225> of the things which should have been utterly destroyed <2764>, to sacrifice <2076>(8800) unto the LORD <3068> thy God <430> in Gilgal <1537>.
22. And Samuel <8050> said <559>(8799), Hath the LORD <3068> as great delight <2656> in burnt offerings <5930> and sacrifices <2077>, as in obeying <8085>(8800) the voice <6963> of the LORD <3068>? Behold, to obey <8085>(8800) is better <2896> than sacrifice <2077>, and to hearken <7181>(8687) than the fat <2459> of rams <352>.
23. For rebellion <4805> is as the sin <2403> of witchcraft <7081>, and stubbornness <6484>(8687) is as iniquity <205> and idolatry <8655>. Because thou hast rejected <3988>(8804) the word <1697> of the LORD <3068>, he hath also rejected <3988>(8799) thee from being king <4428>.
24. And Saul <7586> said <559>(8799) unto Samuel <8050>, I have sinned <2398>(8804): for I have transgressed <5674>(8804) the commandment <6310> of the LORD <3068>, and thy words <1697>: because I feared <3372>(8804) the people <5971>, and obeyed <8085>(8799) their voice <6963>.
25. Now therefore, I pray thee, pardon <5375>(8798) my sin <2403>, and turn again <7725>(8798) with me, that I may worship <7812>(8691) the LORD <3068>.
26. And Samuel <8050> said <559>(8799) unto Saul <7586>, I will not return <7725>(8799) with thee: for thou hast rejected <3988>(8804) the word <1697> of the LORD <3068>, and the LORD <3068> hath rejected <3988>(8799) thee from being king <4428> over Israel <3478>.
27. And as Samuel <8050> turned about <5437>(8735) to go away <3212>(8800), he laid hold <2388>(8686) upon the skirt <3671> of his mantle <4598>, and it rent <7167>(8735).
28. And Samuel <8050> said <559>(8799) unto him, The LORD <3068> hath rent <7167>(8804) the kingdom <4468> of Israel <3478> from thee this day <3117>, and hath given <5414>(8804) it to a neighbour <7453> of thine, that is better <2896> than thou.
29. And also the Strength <5331> of Israel <3478> will not lie <8266>(8762) nor repent <5162>(8735): for he is not a man <120>, that he should repent <5162>(8736).
30. Then he said <559>(8799), I have sinned <2398>(8804): yet honour <3513>(8761) me now, I pray thee, before the elders <2205> of my people <5971>, and before Israel <3478>, and turn again <7725>(8798) with me, that I may worship <7812>(8694) the LORD <3068> thy God <430>.
31. So Samuel <8050> turned again <7725>(8799) after <310> Saul <7586>; and Saul <7586> worshipped <7812>(8691) the LORD <3068>.
32. Then said <559>(8799) Samuel <8050>, Bring ye hither <5066>(8685) to me Agag <90> the king <4428> of the Amalekites <6002>. And Agag <90> came <3212>(8799) unto him delicately <4574>. And Agag <90> said <559>(8799), Surely <403> the bitterness <4751> of death <4194> is past <5493>(8804).
33. And Samuel <8050> said <559>(8799), As thy sword <2719> hath made women <802> childless <7921>(8765), so shall thy mother <517> be childless <7921>(8799) among women <802>. And Samuel <8050> hewed <8158> <0> Agag <90> in pieces <8158>(8762) before <6440> the LORD <3068> in Gilgal <1537>.
34. Then Samuel <8050> went <3212>(8799) to Ramah <7414>; and Saul <7586> went up <5927>(8804) to his house <1004> to Gibeah <1390> of Saul <7586>.
35. And Samuel <8050> came no more <3254>(8804) to see <7200>(8800) Saul <7586> until the day <3117> of his death <4194>: nevertheless <3588> Samuel <8050> mourned <56>(8694) for Saul <7586>: and the LORD <3068> repented <5162>(8738) that he had made Saul <7586> king <4427>(8689) over Israel <3478>.

1. Behold <2005>, the LORD'S <3068> hand <3027> is not shortened <7114>(8804), that it cannot save <3467>(8687); neither his ear <241> heavy <3513>(8804), that it cannot hear <8085>(8800):
2. But your iniquities <5771> have separated <914>(8688) between <996> you and your God <430>, and your sins <2403> have hid <5641>(8689) his face <6440> from you, that he will not hear <8085>(8800).
3. For your hands <3709> are defiled <1351>(8738) with blood <1818>, and your fingers <676> with iniquity <5771>; your lips <8193> have spoken <1696>(8765) lies <8267>, your tongue <3956> hath muttered <1897>(8799) perverseness <5766>.
4. None calleth <7121>(8802) for justice <6664>, nor any pleadeth <8199>(8737) for truth <530>: they trust <982>(8800) in vanity <8414>, and speak <1696>(8763) lies <7723>; they conceive <2029>(8800) mischief <5999>, and bring forth <3205>(8687) iniquity <205>.
5. They hatch <1234>(8765) cockatrice <6848>' eggs <1000>, and weave <707>(8799) the spider's <5908> web <6980>: he that eateth <398>(8802) of their eggs <1000> dieth <4191>(8799), and that which is crushed <2116> breaketh out <1234>(8735) into a viper <660>.
6. Their webs <6980> shall not become garments <899>, neither shall they cover <3680>(8691) themselves with their works <4639>: their works <4639> are works <4639> of iniquity <205>, and the act <6467> of violence <2555> is in their hands <3709>.
7. Their feet <7272> run <7323>(8799) to evil <7451>, and they make haste <4116>(8762) to shed <8210>(8800) innocent <5355> blood <1818>: their thoughts <4284> are thoughts <4284> of iniquity <205>; wasting <7701> and destruction <7667> are in their paths <4546>.
8. The way <1870> of peace <7965> they know <3045>(8804) not; and there is no judgment <4941> in their goings <4570>: they have made them crooked <6140>(8765) paths <5410>: whosoever goeth <1869>(8802) therein shall not know <3045>(8804) peace <7965>.
9. Therefore is judgment <4941> far <7368>(8804) from us, neither doth justice <6666> overtake <5381>(8686) us: we wait <6960>(8762) for light <216>, but behold obscurity <2822>; for brightness <5054>, but we walk <1980>(8762) in darkness <653>.
10. We grope <1659>(8762) for the wall <7023> like the blind <5787>, and we grope <1659>(8762) as if we had no eyes <5869>: we stumble <3782>(8804) at noonday <6672> as in the night <5399>; we are in desolate <820> places as dead <4191>(8801) men.
11. We roar <1993>(8799) all like bears <1677>, and mourn <1897>(8799) sore <1897>(8800) like doves <3123>: we look <6960>(8762) for judgment <4941>, but there is none; for salvation <3444>, but it is far off <7368>(8804) from us.
12. For our transgressions <6588> are multiplied <7231>(8804) before thee, and our sins <2403> testify <6030>(8804) against us: for our transgressions <6588> are with us; and as for our iniquities <5771>, we know <3045>(8804) them;
13. In transgressing <6586>(8800) and lying <3584>(8763) against the LORD <3068>, and departing away <5253>(8800) from <310> our God <430>, speaking <1696>(8763) oppression <6233> and revolt <5627>, conceiving <2029>(8780) and uttering <1897>(8774) from the heart <3820> words <1697> of falsehood <8267>.
14. And judgment <4941> is turned away <5253>(8717) backward <268>, and justice <6666> standeth <5975>(8799) afar off <7350>: for truth <571> is fallen <3782>(8804) in the street <7339>, and equity <5229> cannot <3201>(8799) enter <935>(8800).
15. Yea, truth <571> faileth <5737>(8737); and he that departeth <5493>(8804) from evil <7451> maketh himself a prey <7997>(8711): and the LORD <3068> saw <7200>(8799) it, and it displeased <3415>(8799) <5869> him that there was no judgment <4941>.
16. And he saw <7200>(8799) that there was no man <376>, and wondered <8074>(8709) that there was no intercessor <6293>(8688): therefore his arm <2220> brought salvation <3467>(8686) unto him; and his righteousness <6666>, it sustained <5564>(8804) him.
17. For he put on <3847>(8799) righteousness <6666> as a breastplate <8302>, and an helmet <3553> of salvation <3444> upon his head <7218>; and he put on <3847>(8799) the garments <899> of vengeance <5359> for clothing <8516>, and was clad <5844>(8799) with zeal <7068> as a cloke <4598>.
18. According to <5921> their deeds <1578>, accordingly he will repay <7999>(8762), fury <2534> to his adversaries <6862>, recompence <1576> to his enemies <341>(8802); to the islands <339> he will repay <7999>(8762) recompence <1576>.
19. So shall they fear <3372>(8799) the name <8034> of the LORD <3068> from the west <4628>, and his glory <3519> from the rising <4217> of the sun <8121>. When the enemy <6862> shall come in <935>(8799) like a flood <5104>, the Spirit <7307> of the LORD <3068> shall lift up a standard <5127>(8790) against him.
20. And the Redeemer <1350>(8802) shall come <935>(8804) to Zion <6726>, and unto them that turn <7725>(8802) from transgression <6588> in Jacob <3290>, saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068>.
21. As for me, this is my covenant <1285> with them, saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>; My spirit <7307> that is upon thee, and my words <1697> which I have put <7760>(8804) in thy mouth <6310>, shall not depart <4185>(8799) out of thy mouth <6310>, nor out of the mouth <6310> of thy seed <2233>, nor out of the mouth <6310> of thy seed's <2233> seed <2233>, saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>, from henceforth and for <5704> ever <5769>.

THE FRUIT OF REPENTANCE
When the Pharisees and Sadducees came to John to be baptised by him, John had a strong message for them. He said, "You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not think you can say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our father.' I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. The axe is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire."
In their baptisms they declared that they had decided to change their way of life and were now going to turn back to God. But what John told them was to make sure that their decision showed in their actions. It is no use looking at our heritage and thinking that can save us - we must be God's people both in word and in actions. If we say we are going to be God's people but then don't act like it, we end up just like a good looking fruit tree that only has bad fruit. Let us not get caught in the same trap. Stop pretending and produce good fruit.
"IF YOU HAVE REALLY TURNED FROM YOUR SINS TO DO, PRODUCE FRUIT THAT WILL PROVE IT"
There is only one way to tell if a person has really changed. It is not by what they say or preach. It is not by what they do when they can be seen in public or when they think that someone is looking. The way to tell is if a person has really changed is if they have changed in their whole life - little private things as well as the big public things, when they can't be caught out no matter where or when you try to catch them, when the attitudes and opinions of others change toward them.
The people John the Baptist was speaking to came to repent for their sins. If we have accepted Christ then we need to have repented from our sins too. There are too many people who say they are Christians and who have not changed the way they live. They may go to church on Sunday and say grace before their meals, but then they go out and get drunk, read pornographic magazines, are ruthless in business, or beat their children and wives. Would Christ accept that?
Now that we have turned our faces from our sins, let us produce good fruit to prove that we have changed. Produce good fruit first in the small private areas of life and then in public where everyone can see. Be consistent.

Some people believe that Jesus faced an external tempter. They believe that this was Satan, a supernatural being (fallen angel), the universal agitator of evil.
If Satan exists, he (?) would have been created by Yahweh. Divine angels, by nature, are immortal. Thus, Satan, a supposed fallen divine angel, would be immortal. That would mean that evil would exist forever. But, that is not in Yahweh's plan.
The faithful followers of Jesus will live forever in peace (Rev 21:4). But all evil, including death itself will be abolished (Rev 20:10,14).
The word Satan, which Bible translators chose to capitalise and personify, is nothing more than the innate human tendency to be oppositional to God's laws - the flesh opposing the Spirit.
And so, each person is tempted internally by his/her own desires and not by an external agent. Jesus, being a man and having a human nature, weakened by forty days of fasting, was tempted internally. He overcame each temptation by refuting it with the power of the scripture.

4:6 we must always be on guard for those who would wrest scripture to their own devices. Those who deny the inspiration of scripture constantly try to use scripture in this way.

In today’s 4th chapter of Matthew we read of a very thought provoking event: this occurred before Jesus began his ministry. It is a challenge to understand it correctly! The chapter begins by telling us “Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness…” Led by the Spirit!? So it was God’s will that this event happened. It took place in the wilderness away from people. The reason why the Spirit led him there was “to be tempted by the devil.”
What is the devil? Well first we note that there were 3 types of temptation that Jesus rejected! His “answer” in v. 4 is to state “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'” We can see what that means for us today – we have that “word” in our hands, the source of ‘strength’ for our hearts to enable us to effectively resist inclinations to think or do anything that is ungodly.
But it is not sufficient to simply resist – we must think positively – in an ungodly world. We must feel ‘inspired’ by the future God’s word reveals, as we have been reading in Isaiah – and the lessons of failure – as shown by Saul when he became king..
How did Matthew come to write this account of his Master’s temptation? It is not until we come to his Matt 9:9 that we read of him being called to follow Jesus. So Jesus must have told him – and no doubt the other disciples too! And what was the method that Jesus often used in teaching? Parables! It is obvious that v.8 is not literal, it tells us, “Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory.” No such mountain exists! Satan told Jesus, “All these I will give you, if you will fall down and worship me.” [v.9] What is Satan the symbol of? The temptation to serve self – before (or as well as) serving God!
Judas gave in to the temptation to serve self. Jesus said, “Did I not choose you, the Twelve? And yet one of you is a devil.” John 6:70 Jesus was surrounded by those with such minds. The start of this same chapter tells us of the feeding of the 5,000 – look how the people reacted! The people declared, “”This is indeed the Prophet who is to come into the world!” [v.14]
What happened next! ‘Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.” But Jesus had come to be king! But this was a temptation to do the right thing – the wrong way! Let us reflect on all the forms of temptation surrounding us today! Truly “man shall not live (eternally) by what this world provides with all its’ opportunities; let us make sure we live ” by every word that comes from the mouth of God.'”

1. <1161> In <1722> those <1565> days <2250> came <3854>(5736) John <2491> the Baptist <910>, preaching <2784>(5723) in <1722> the wilderness <2048> of Judaea <2449>,
2. And <2532> saying <3004>(5723), Repent ye <3340>(5720): for <1063> the kingdom <932> of heaven <3772> is at hand <1448>(5758).
3. For <1063> this <3778> is he <2076>(5748) that was spoken <4483>(5685) of by <5259> the prophet <4396> Esaias <2268>, saying <3004>(5723), The voice <5456> of one crying <994>(5723) in <1722> the wilderness <2048>, Prepare ye <2090>(5657) the way <3598> of the Lord <2962>, make <4160>(5720) his <846> paths <5147> straight <2117>.
4. And <1161> the same <846> John <2491> had <2192>(5707) his <848> raiment <1742> of <575> camel's <2574> hair <2359>, and <2532> a leathern <1193> girdle <2223> about <4012> his <848> loins <3751>; and <1161> his <846> meat <5160> was <2258>(5713) locusts <200> and <2532> wild <66> honey <3192>.
5. Then <5119> went out <1607>(5711) to <4314> him <846> Jerusalem <2414>, and <2532> all <3956> Judaea <2449>, and <2532> all <3956> the region round about <4066> Jordan <2446>,
6. And <2532> were baptized <907>(5712) of <5259> him <846> in <1722> Jordan <2446>, confessing <1843>(5734) their <848> sins <266>.
7. But <1161> when he saw <1492>(5631) many <4183> of the Pharisees <5330> and <2532> Sadducees <4523> come <2064>(5740) to <1909> his <848> baptism <908>, he said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, O generation <1081> of vipers <2191>, who <5101> hath warned <5263>(5656) you <5213> to flee <5343>(5629) from <575> the wrath <3709> to come <3195>(5723)?
8. Bring forth <4160>(5657) therefore <3767> fruits <2590> meet <514> for repentance <3341>:
9. And <2532> think <1380>(5661) not <3361> to say <3004>(5721) within <1722> yourselves <1438>, We have <2192>(5719) Abraham <11> to our father <3962>: for <1063> I say <3004>(5719) unto you <5213>, that <3754> God <2316> is able <1410>(5736) of <1537> these <5130> stones <3037> to raise up <1453>(5658) children <5043> unto Abraham <11>.
10. And <1161> now <2235> also <2532> the axe <513> is laid <2749>(5736) unto <4314> the root <4491> of the trees <1186>: therefore <3767> every <3956> tree <1186> which bringeth <4160> <0> not <3361> forth <4160>(5723) good <2570> fruit <2590> is hewn down <1581>(5743), and <2532> cast <906>(5743) into <1519> the fire <4442>.
11. I <1473> indeed <3303> baptize <907>(5719) you <5209> with <1722> water <5204> unto <1519> repentance <3341>: but <1161> he that cometh <2064>(5740) after <3694> me <3450> is <2076>(5748) mightier than <2478> I <3450>, whose <3739> shoes <5266> I am <1510>(5748) not <3756> worthy <2425> to bear <941>(5658): he shall baptize <907>(5692) you <5209> with <1722> the Holy <40> Ghost <4151>, and <2532> with fire <4442>:
12. Whose <3739> fan <4425> is in <1722> his <846> hand <5495>, and <2532> he will throughly purge <1245>(5692) his <848> floor <257>, and <2532> gather <4863>(5692) his <848> wheat <4621> into <1519> the garner <596>; but <1161> he will burn up <2618>(5692) the chaff <892> with unquenchable <762> fire <4442>.
13. Then <5119> cometh <3854>(5736) Jesus <2424> from <575> Galilee <1056> to <1909> Jordan <2446> unto <4314> John <2491>, to be baptized <907>(5683) of <5259> him <846>.
14. But <1161> John <2491> forbad <1254>(5707) him, saying <3004>(5723), I <1473> have <2192>(5719) need <5532> to be baptized <907>(5683) of <5259> thee <4675>, and <2532> comest <2064>(5736) thou <4771> to <4314> me <3165>?
15. And <1161> Jesus <2424> answering <611>(5679) said <2036>(5627) unto <4314> him <846>, Suffer <863>(5628) it to be so now <737>: for <1063> thus <3779> it becometh <4241>(5723) <2076>(5748) us <2254> to fulfil <4137>(5658) all <3956> righteousness <1343>. Then <5119> he suffered <863>(5719) him <846>.
16. And <2532> Jesus <2424>, when he was baptized <907>(5685), went up <305>(5627) straightway <2117> out of <575> the water <5204>: and <2532>, lo <2400>(5628), the heavens <3772> were opened <455>(5681) unto him <846>, and <2532> he saw <1492>(5627) the Spirit <4151> of God <2316> descending <2597>(5723) like <5616> a dove <4058>, and <2532> lighting <2064>(5740) upon <1909> him <846>:
17. And <2532> lo <2400>(5628) a voice <5456> from <1537> heaven <3772>, saying <3004>(5723), This <3778> is <2076>(5748) my <3450> beloved <27> Son <5207>, in <1722> whom <3739> I am well pleased <2106>(5656).
1. Then <5119> was Jesus <2424> led up <321>(5681) of <5259> the Spirit <4151> into <1519> the wilderness <2048> to be tempted <3985>(5683) of <5259> the devil <1228>.
2. And <2532> when he had fasted <3522>(5660) forty <5062> days <2250> and <2532> forty <5062> nights <3571>, he was afterward <5305> an hungred <3983>(5656).
3. And <2532> when the tempter <3985>(5723) came <4334>(5631) to him <846>, he said <2036>(5627), If <1487> thou be <1488>(5748) the Son <5207> of God <2316>, command <2036>(5628) that <2443> these <3778> stones <3037> be made <1096>(5638) bread <740>.
4. But <1161> he answered <611>(5679) and said <2036>(5627), It is written <1125>(5769), Man <444> shall <2198> <0> not <3756> live <2198>(5695) by <1909> bread <740> alone <3441>, but <235> by <1909> every <3956> word <4487> that proceedeth <1607>(5740) out of <1223> the mouth <4750> of God <2316>.
5. Then <5119> the devil <1228> taketh <3880> <0> him <846> up <3880>(5719) into <1519> the holy <40> city <4172>, and <2532> setteth <2476>(5719) him <846> on <1909> a pinnacle <4419> of the temple <2411>,
6. And <2532> saith <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, If <1487> thou be <1488>(5748) the Son <5207> of God <2316>, cast <906>(5628) thyself <4572> down <2736>: for <1063> it is written <1125>(5769), <3754> He shall give <1781> <0> his <848> angels <32> charge <1781>(5699) concerning <4012> thee <4675>: and <2532> in <1909> their hands <5495> they shall bear <142> <0> thee <4571> up <142>(5692), lest at any time <3379> thou dash <4350>(5661) thy <4675> foot <4228> against <4314> a stone <3037>.
7. Jesus <2424> said <5346>(5713) unto him <846>, It is written <1125>(5769) again <3825>, Thou shalt <1598> <0> not <3756> tempt <1598>(5692) the Lord <2962> thy <4675> God <2316>.
8. Again <3825>, the devil <1228> taketh <3880> <0> him <846> up <3880>(5719) into <1519> an exceeding <3029> high <5308> mountain <3735>, and <2532> sheweth <1166>(5719) him <846> all <3956> the kingdoms <932> of the world <2889>, and <2532> the glory <1391> of them <846>;
9. And <2532> saith <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, All <3956> these things <5023> will I give <1325>(5692) thee <4671>, if <1437> thou wilt fall down <4098>(5631) and worship <4352>(5661) me <3427>.
10. Then <5119> saith <3004>(5719) Jesus <2424> unto him <846>, Get thee hence <5217>(5720), Satan <4567>: for <1063> it is written <1125>(5769), Thou shalt worship <4352>(5692) the Lord <2962> thy <4675> God <2316>, and <2532> him <846> only <3441> shalt thou serve <3000>(5692).
11. Then <5119> the devil <1228> leaveth <863>(5719) him <846>, and <2532>, behold <2400>(5628), angels <32> came <4334>(5656) and <2532> ministered <1247>(5707) unto him <846>.
12. Now <1161> when Jesus <2424> had heard <191>(5660) that <3754> John <2491> was cast into prison <3860>(5681), he departed <402>(5656) into <1519> Galilee <1056>;
13. And <2532> leaving <2641>(5631) Nazareth <3478>, he came <2064>(5631) and dwelt <2730>(5656) in <1519> Capernaum <2584>, which <3588> is upon the sea coast <3864>, in <1722> the borders <3725> of Zabulon <2194> and <2532> Nephthalim <3508>:
14. That <2443> it might be fulfilled <4137>(5686) which <3588> was spoken <4483>(5685) by <1223> Esaias <2268> the prophet <4396>, saying <3004>(5723),
15. The land <1093> of Zabulon <2194>, and <2532> the land <1093> of Nephthalim <3508>, by the way <3598> of the sea <2281>, beyond <4008> Jordan <2446>, Galilee <1056> of the Gentiles <1484>;
16. The people <2992> which <3588> sat <2521>(5740) in <1722> darkness <4655> saw <1492>(5627) great <3173> light <5457>; and <2532> to them which <3588> sat <2521>(5740) in <1722> the region <5561> and <2532> shadow <4639> of death <2288> light <5457> is sprung up <393>(5656) <846>.
17. From <575> that time <5119> Jesus <2424> began <756>(5662) to preach <2784>(5721), and <2532> to say <3004>(5721), Repent <3340>(5720): for <1063> the kingdom <932> of heaven <3772> is at hand <1448>(5758).
18. And <1161> Jesus <2424>, walking <4043>(5723) by <3844> the sea <2281> of Galilee <1056>, saw <1492>(5627) two <1417> brethren <80>, Simon <4613> called <3004>(5746) Peter <4074>, and <2532> Andrew <406> his <846> brother <80>, casting <906>(5723) a net <293> into <1519> the sea <2281>: for <1063> they were <2258>(5713) fishers <231>.
19. And <2532> he saith <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, Follow <1205>(5773) <3694> me <3450>, and <2532> I will make <4160>(5692) you <5209> fishers <231> of men <444>.
20. And <1161> they straightway <2112> left <863>(5631) their nets <1350>, and <2532> followed <190>(5656) him <846>.
21. And <2532> going on <4260>(5631) from thence <1564>, he saw <1492>(5627) other <243> two <1417> brethren <80>, James <2385> the son of <3588> Zebedee <2199>, and <2532> John <2491> his <846> brother <80>, in <1722> a ship <4143> with <3326> Zebedee <2199> their <848> father <3962>, mending <2675>(5723) their <846> nets <1350>; and <2532> he called <2564>(5656) them <846>.
22. And <1161> they immediately <2112> left <863>(5631) the ship <4143> and <2532> their <848> father <3962>, and followed <190>(5656) him <846>.
23. And <2532> Jesus <2424> went about <4013>(5707) all <3650> Galilee <1056>, teaching <1321>(5723) in <1722> their <846> synagogues <4864>, and <2532> preaching <2784>(5723) the gospel <2098> of the kingdom <932>, and <2532> healing <2323>(5723) all <3956> manner of sickness <3554> and <2532> all <3956> manner of disease <3119> among <1722> the people <2992>.
24. And <2532> his <846> fame <189> went <565>(5627) throughout <1519> all <3650> Syria <4947>: and <2532> they brought <4374>(5656) unto him <846> all <3956> sick <2560> people <2192>(5723) that were taken with <4912>(5746) divers <4164> diseases <3554> and <2532> torments <931>, and <2532> those which were possessed with devils <1139>(5740), and <2532> those which were lunatick <4583>(5740), and <2532> those that had the palsy <3885>; and <2532> he healed <2323>(5656) them <846>.
25. And <2532> there followed <190>(5656) him <846> great <4183> multitudes of people <3793> from <575> Galilee <1056>, and <2532> from Decapolis <1179>, and <2532> from Jerusalem <2414>, and <2532> from Judaea <2449>, and <2532> from beyond <4008> Jordan <2446>.
