However we choose to explain what happened in this chapter, there is a clear message. It is obviously possible to remove ourselves so far from God that he no longer has any desire to help us. Saul's position was quite extreme here in God's eyes, and yet it seems to us that all he did was to disobey one small command. It all goes to impress upon us that it is our state of heart that matters. Saul's was wrong, and he was therefore condemned for just one sin, where David's was right, which caused him to be forgiven of many sins, including murder. It is our state of heart that matters, not our track record of obedience, though, of course, one will tend to influence the other!

1Sam 28.
What is really going on in this chapter? Did God really raise Samuel to speak with Saul? Or instead is this a deliberate ruse performed by an overwrought believer in Saul? So again what is really happening here?
Since one can't communicate with the dead, one of two things happened.
1. God resurrected Samuel for the purpose of rebuking Saul - but would He have done so through a witch?
2. The witch pretends to see Samuel (in another room) and changes her voice and pretends to trick Saul.
Let's go with the 2nd alternative and see how it works out.
v. 8. Wouldn't she have known Saul at a glance because of his stature?
v. 9 She's maneuvering here to make her own position safe
v. 10. Only a man of such high standing could give assurance of this kind.
v. 11. Again she must have known that this was Saul!
v. 12. Cleverly she led him to believe that this recognition had been imparted to her through various spirits.
v. 13. "I see a spirit coming up out of the ground." "God's" are often used of rulers.
v. 14. Her description was just as vague as medium descriptions usually were.
Saul though overwrought and eager was convinced.
v. 15. here is the witch playing Samuel with a strange voice.
v. 16. The witch had made up her mind what line to take. Along with the rest of Israel, she knew how Samuel had publicly rebuked and rejected Saul and had foretold David's accession to the throne. She knew, too, that Saul's prospects of success in battle were nil. So, clearly, the time had come for a change of regime to which all the nation had been looking forward to. She could, therefore, risk a prophecy which would enhance her reputation and yet at the same time merely tell Saul what he already knew.
v. 19 LXX - "with thee thy sons shall fall (i.e. in battle).
v. 21 . When the woman came to Saul and saw....So she was in some inner "holy place".

David's ability to win trust and admiration
"Now it happened in those days that the Philistines gathered their armies together for war, to fight with Israel. And Achish said to David, 'You assuredly know that you will go out with me to battle, you and your men.' "
Here the armies of the Philistines were preparing for battle with Israel. How is it possible that David, the anointed king of Israel could be fighting on the side of the Philistines? Achish the King of the Philistines completely trusted David even though he knew David and his men could easily turn around in the battle and change sides.
"So David said to Achish, 'Surely you know what your servant can do.' And Achish said to David, 'Therefore I will make you one of my chief guardians forever.' "
What did Achish mean by "chief guardian", and why did he trust David? In the original Hebrew the phrase translates more literally as "keeper of my head", or in other words, he was causing David to swear to be responsible for Achish's life. From this we can see that Achish had become very fond of David, trusted him completely, and was quite willing to put his own life into David's hands. It may seem odd but the same thing happened the other way around, where the men of Gath (called "Gittites", from Achish's Philistine city) became David's most trusted bodyguards (see 2Sam 15:18-22).

28:15.17 Saul speaks of “God” but “Samuel” gives this God a name – “Yahweh”. Saul’s use of god highlights his lack of appreciation that Yahweh is the God if Israel.

1. And it came to pass in those days <3117>, that the Philistines <6430> gathered <6908> <0> their armies <4264> together <6908>(8799) for warfare <6635>, to fight <3898>(8736) with Israel <3478>. And Achish <397> said <559>(8799) unto David <1732>, Know <3045>(8799) thou assuredly <3045>(8800), that thou shalt go out <3318>(8799) with me to battle <4264>, thou and thy men <582>.
2. And David <1732> said <559>(8799) to Achish <397>, Surely <3651> thou shalt know <3045>(8799) what thy servant <5650> can do <6213>(8799). And Achish <397> said <559>(8799) to David <1732>, Therefore will I make <7760>(8799) thee keeper <8104>(8802) of mine head <7218> for ever <3117>.
3. Now Samuel <8050> was dead <4191>(8804), and all Israel <3478> had lamented <5594>(8799) him, and buried <6912>(8799) him in Ramah <7414>, even in his own city <5892>. And Saul <7586> had put away <5493>(8689) those that had familiar spirits <178>, and the wizards <3049>, out of the land <776>.
4. And the Philistines <6430> gathered themselves together <6908>(8735), and came <935>(8799) and pitched <2583>(8799) in Shunem <7766>: and Saul <7586> gathered <6908> <0> all Israel <3478> together <6908>(8799), and they pitched <2583>(8799) in Gilboa <1533>.
5. And when Saul <7586> saw <7200>(8799) the host <4264> of the Philistines <6430>, he was afraid <3372>(8799), and his heart <3820> greatly <3966> trembled <2729>(8799).
6. And when Saul <7586> enquired <7592>(8799) of the LORD <3068>, the LORD <3068> answered <6030>(8804) him not, neither by dreams <2472>, nor by Urim <224>, nor by prophets <5030>.
7. Then said <559>(8799) Saul <7586> unto his servants <5650>, Seek <1245>(8761) me a woman <802> that hath <1172> a familiar spirit <178>, that I may go <3212>(8799) to her, and enquire <1875>(8799) of her. And his servants <5650> said <559>(8799) to him, Behold, there is a woman <802> that hath <1172> a familiar spirit <178> at Endor <5874>.
8. And Saul <7586> disguised <2664>(8691) himself, and put on <3847>(8799) other <312> raiment <899>, and he went <3212>(8799), and two <8147> men <582> with him, and they came <935>(8799) to the woman <802> by night <3915>: and he said <559>(8799), I pray thee, divine <7080>(8798) unto me by the familiar spirit <178>, and bring me him up <5927>(8685), whom I shall name <559>(8799) unto thee.
9. And the woman <802> said <559>(8799) unto him, Behold, thou knowest <3045>(8804) what Saul <7586> hath done <6213>(8804), how he hath cut off <3772>(8689) those that have familiar spirits <178>, and the wizards <3049>, out of the land <776>: wherefore then layest thou a snare <5367>(8693) for my life <5315>, to cause me to die <4191>(8687)?
10. And Saul <7586> sware <7650>(8735) to her by the LORD <3068>, saying <559>(8800), As the LORD <3068> liveth <2416>, there shall <518> no punishment <5771> happen <7136>(8799) to thee for this thing <1697>.
11. Then said <559>(8799) the woman <802>, Whom shall I bring up <5927>(8686) unto thee? And he said <559>(8799), Bring me up <5927>(8685) Samuel <8050>.
12. And when the woman <802> saw <7200>(8799) Samuel <8050>, she cried <2199>(8799) with a loud <1419> voice <6963>: and the woman <802> spake <559>(8799) to Saul <7586>, saying <559>(8800), Why hast thou deceived <7411>(8765) me? for thou art Saul <7586>.
13. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799) unto her, Be not afraid <3372>(8799): for what sawest <7200>(8804) thou? And the woman <802> said <559>(8799) unto Saul <7586>, I saw <7200>(8804) gods <430> ascending <5927>(8802) out of the earth <776>.
14. And he said <559>(8799) unto her, What form <8389> is he of? And she said <559>(8799), An old <2205> man <376> cometh up <5927>(8802); and he is covered <5844>(8802) with a mantle <4598>. And Saul <7586> perceived <3045>(8799) that it was Samuel <8050>, and he stooped <6915>(8799) with his face <639> to the ground <776>, and bowed <7812>(8691) himself.
15. And Samuel <8050> said <559>(8799) to Saul <7586>, Why hast thou disquieted <7264>(8689) me, to bring me up <5927>(8687)? And Saul <7586> answered <559>(8799), I am sore <3966> distressed <6887>(8804); for the Philistines <6430> make war <3898>(8737) against me, and God <430> is departed <5493>(8804) from me, and answereth <6030>(8804) me no more, neither by <3027> prophets <5030>, nor by dreams <2472>: therefore I have called <7121>(8799) thee, that thou mayest make known <3045>(8687) unto me what I shall do <6213>(8799).
16. Then said <559>(8799) Samuel <8050>, Wherefore then dost thou ask <7592>(8799) of me, seeing the LORD <3068> is departed <5493>(8804) from thee, and is become thine enemy <6145>?
17. And the LORD <3068> hath done <6213>(8799) to him, as he spake <1696>(8765) by me <3027>: for the LORD <3068> hath rent <7167>(8799) the kingdom <4467> out of thine hand <3027>, and given <5414>(8799) it to thy neighbour <7453>, even to David <1732>:
18. Because <834> thou obeyedst <8085>(8804) not the voice <6963> of the LORD <3068>, nor executedst <6213>(8804) his fierce <2740> wrath <639> upon Amalek <6002>, therefore hath the LORD <3068> done <6213>(8804) this thing <1697> unto thee this day <3117>.
19. Moreover the LORD <3068> will also deliver <5414>(8799) Israel <3478> with thee into the hand <3027> of the Philistines <6430>: and to morrow <4279> shalt thou and thy sons <1121> be with me: the LORD <3068> also shall deliver <5414>(8799) the host <4264> of Israel <3478> into the hand <3027> of the Philistines <6430>.
20. Then Saul <7586> fell <5307>(8799) straightway <4116>(8762) all <4393> along <6967> on the earth <776>, and was sore <3966> afraid <3372>(8799), because of the words <1697> of Samuel <8050>: and there was no strength <3581> in him; for he had eaten <398>(8804) no bread <3899> all the day <3117>, nor all the night <3915>.
21. And the woman <802> came <935>(8799) unto Saul <7586>, and saw <7200>(8799) that he was sore <3966> troubled <926>(8738), and said <559>(8799) unto him, Behold, thine handmaid <8198> hath obeyed <8085>(8804) thy voice <6963>, and I have put <7760>(8799) my life <5315> in my hand <3709>, and have hearkened <8085>(8799) unto thy words <1697> which thou spakest <1696>(8765) unto me.
22. Now therefore, I pray thee, hearken <8085>(8798) thou also unto the voice <6963> of thine handmaid <8198>, and let me set <7760>(8799) a morsel <6595> of bread <3899> before <6440> thee; and eat <398>(8798), that thou mayest have strength <3581>, when thou goest <3212>(8799) on thy way <1870>.
23. But he refused <3985>(8762), and said <559>(8799), I will not eat <398>(8799). But his servants <5650>, together with the woman <802>, compelled <6555>(8799) him; and he hearkened <8085>(8799) unto their voice <6963>. So he arose <6965>(8799) from the earth <776>, and sat <3427>(8799) upon the bed <4296>.
24. And the woman <802> had a fat <4770> calf <5695> in the house <1004>; and she hasted <4116>(8762), and killed <2076>(8799) it, and took <3947>(8799) flour <7058>, and kneaded <3888>(8799) it, and did bake <644>(8799) unleavened bread <4682> thereof:
25. And she brought <5066>(8686) it before <6440> Saul <7586>, and before <6440> his servants <5650>; and they did eat <398>(8799). Then they rose up <6965>(8799), and went away <3212>(8799) that night <3915>.

1. If thou wilt return <7725>(8799), O Israel <3478>, saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068>, return <7725>(8799) unto me: and if thou wilt put away <5493>(8686) thine abominations <8251> out of my sight <6440>, then shalt thou not remove <5110>(8799).
2. And thou shalt swear <7650>(8738), The LORD <3068> liveth <2416>, in truth <571>, in judgment <4941>, and in righteousness <6666>; and the nations <1471> shall bless <1288>(8694) themselves in him, and in him shall they glory <1984>(8691).
3. For thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068> to the men <376> of Judah <3063> and Jerusalem <3389>, Break up <5214>(8798) your fallow ground <5215>, and sow <2232>(8799) not among thorns <6975>.
4. Circumcise <4135>(8734) yourselves to the LORD <3068>, and take away <5493>(8685) the foreskins <6190> of your heart <3824>, ye men <376> of Judah <3063> and inhabitants <3427>(8802) of Jerusalem <3389>: lest my fury <2534> come forth <3318>(8799) like fire <784>, and burn <1197>(8804) that none can quench <3518>(8764) it, because <6440> of the evil <7455> of your doings <4611>.
5. Declare <5046>(8685) ye in Judah <3063>, and publish <8085>(8685) in Jerusalem <3389>; and say <559>(8798), Blow <8628>(8798) ye the trumpet <7782> in the land <776>: cry <7121>(8798), gather together <4390>(8761), and say <559>(8798), Assemble <622>(8734) yourselves, and let us go <935>(8799) into the defenced <4013> cities <5892>.
6. Set up <5375>(8798) the standard <5251> toward Zion <6726>: retire <5756>(8685), stay <5975>(8799) not: for I will bring <935>(8688) evil <7451> from the north <6828>, and a great <1419> destruction <7667>.
7. The lion <738> is come up <5927>(8804) from his thicket <5441>, and the destroyer <7843>(8688) of the Gentiles <1471> is on his way <5265>(8804); he is gone forth <3318>(8804) from his place <4725> to make <7760>(8800) thy land <776> desolate <8047>; and thy cities <5892> shall be laid waste <5327>(8799), without an inhabitant <3427>(8802).
8. For this gird <2296>(8798) you with sackcloth <8242>, lament <5594>(8798) and howl <3213>(8685): for the fierce <2740> anger <639> of the LORD <3068> is not turned back <7725>(8804) from us.
9. And it shall come to pass at that day <3117>, saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068>, that the heart <3820> of the king <4428> shall perish <6>(8799), and the heart <3820> of the princes <8269>; and the priests <3548> shall be astonished <8074>(8738), and the prophets <5030> shall wonder <8539>(8799).
10. Then said <559>(8799) I, Ah <162>, Lord <136> GOD <3069>! surely <403> thou hast greatly <5377>(8687) deceived <5377>(8689) this people <5971> and Jerusalem <3389>, saying <559>(8800), Ye shall have peace <7965>; whereas the sword <2719> reacheth <5060>(8804) unto the soul <5315>.
11. At that time <6256> shall it be said <559>(8735) to this people <5971> and to Jerusalem <3389>, A dry <6703> wind <7307> of the high places <8205> in the wilderness <4057> toward <1870> the daughter <1323> of my people <5971>, not to fan <2219>(8800), nor to cleanse <1305>(8687),
12. Even a full <4392> wind <7307> from those places shall come <935>(8799) unto me: now also will I give <1696>(8762) sentence <4941> against them.
13. Behold, he shall come up <5927>(8799) as clouds <6051>, and his chariots <4818> shall be as a whirlwind <5492>: his horses <5483> are swifter <7043>(8804) than eagles <5404>. Woe <188> unto us! for we are spoiled <7703>(8795).
14. O Jerusalem <3389>, wash <3526>(8761) thine heart <3820> from wickedness <7451>, that thou mayest be saved <3467>(8735). How long shall thy vain <205> thoughts <4284> lodge <3885>(8686) within <7130> thee?
15. For a voice <6963> declareth <5046>(8688) from Dan <1835>, and publisheth <8085>(8688) affliction <205> from mount <2022> Ephraim <669>.
16. Make ye mention <2142>(8685) to the nations <1471>; behold, publish <8085>(8685) against Jerusalem <3389>, that watchers <5341>(8802) come <935>(8802) from a far <4801> country <776>, and give out <5414>(8799) their voice <6963> against the cities <5892> of Judah <3063>.
17. As keepers <8104>(8802) of a field <7704>, are they against her round about <5439>; because she hath been rebellious <4784>(8804) against me, saith <5002>(8803) the LORD <3068>.
18. Thy way <1870> and thy doings <4611> have procured <6213>(8804) these things unto thee; this is thy wickedness <7451>, because it is bitter <4751>, because it reacheth <5060>(8804) unto thine heart <3820>.
19. My bowels <4578>, my bowels <4578>! I am pained <2342>(8799)(8675) <3176>(8686) at my very <7023> heart <3820>; my heart <3820> maketh a noise <1993>(8802) in me; I cannot hold my peace <2790>(8686), because thou hast heard <8085>(8804), O my soul <5315>, the sound <6963> of the trumpet <7782>, the alarm <8643> of war <4421>.
20. Destruction <7667> upon destruction <7667> is cried <7121>(8738); for the whole land <776> is spoiled <7703>(8795): suddenly <6597> are my tents <168> spoiled <7703>(8795), and my curtains <3407> in a moment <7281>.
21. How long shall I see <7200>(8799) the standard <5251>, and hear <8085>(8799) the sound <6963> of the trumpet <7782>?
22. For my people <5971> is foolish <191>, they have not known <3045>(8804) me; they are sottish <5530> children <1121>, and they have none understanding <995>(8737): they are wise <2450> to do evil <7489>(8687), but to do good <3190>(8687) they have no knowledge <3045>(8804).
23. I beheld <7200>(8804) the earth <776>, and, lo, it was without form <8414>, and void <922>; and the heavens <8064>, and they had no light <216>.
24. I beheld <7200>(8804) the mountains <2022>, and, lo, they trembled <7493>(8801), and all the hills <1389> moved lightly <7043>(8701).
25. I beheld <7200>(8804), and, lo, there was no man <120>, and all the birds <5775> of the heavens <8064> were fled <5074>(8804).
26. I beheld <7200>(8804), and, lo, the fruitful place <3759> was a wilderness <4057>, and all the cities <5892> thereof were broken down <5422>(8738) at the presence <6440> of the LORD <3068>, and by his fierce <2740> anger <639>.
27. For thus hath the LORD <3068> said <559>(8804), The whole land <776> shall be desolate <8077>; yet will I not make <6213>(8799) a full end <3617>.
28. For this shall the earth <776> mourn <56>(8799), and the heavens <8064> above <4605> be black <6937>(8804): because I have spoken <1696>(8765) it, I have purposed <2161>(8804) it, and will not repent <5162>(8738), neither will I turn back <7725>(8799) from it.
29. The whole city <5892> shall flee <1272>(8802) for the noise <6963> of the horsemen <6571> and bowmen <7198> <7411>(8802); they shall go <935>(8804) into thickets <5645>, and climb up <5927>(8804) upon the rocks <3710>: every city <5892> shall be forsaken <5800>(8803), and not a man <376> dwell <3427>(8802) therein <2004>.
30. And when thou art spoiled <7703>(8803), what wilt thou do <6213>(8799)? Though thou clothest <3847>(8799) thyself with crimson <8144>, though thou deckest <5710>(8799) thee with ornaments <5716> of gold <2091>, though thou rentest <7167>(8799) thy face <5869> with painting <6320>, in vain <7723> shalt thou make thyself fair <3302>(8691); thy lovers <5689>(8802) will despise <3988>(8804) thee, they will seek <1245>(8762) thy life <5315>.
31. For I have heard <8085>(8804) a voice <6963> as of a woman in travail <2470>(8802), and the anguish <6869> as of her that bringeth forth her first child <1069>(8688), the voice <6963> of the daughter <1323> of Zion <6726>, that bewaileth <3306>(8691) herself, that spreadeth <6566>(8762) her hands <3709>, saying, Woe <188> is me now! for my soul <5315> is wearied <5888>(8804) because of murderers <2026>(8802).
Notes that are not verse specific
Jesus was fulfilling his ministry to separate light from darkness (John 1:9-12, 3:19-21, 1:4-5). He was that light, but the people didn't comprehend that light, nor were drawn to it. This is explained in those verses in John, and born out in the examples in this chapter.
There were two kinds of people in the audience the day the feeding took place. Those who God had prepared for salvation (the wheat) and those He hadn't (the tares). The first group had studied their scriptures; searching for some clue as to who their Messiah would be. They were interested in their salvation. The second group hadn't done this. They were too busy, or had other things more pressing in their lives, or had been brought up on the scriptures but not really been interested. Their knowledge was by hearsay. The second group found the miracle Jesus performed impressive, satisfying and tasty. But the first group suddenly recognised the following:
1) Jesus was their king in the line of David, the Christ (2Sam 5:2, Psa 78:71).
2) Jesus came doing the miracles of Elisha, Elijah's successor. This meant John was in fact the one like Elijah who they were waiting for, and Jesus was his successor, the Christ. (2Kin 4:40-44).
3) That God rejected the Pharisees and was giving Jesus as a true Shepherd in the line of David, the Christ (Eze 34:12-24).
4) Salvation had come to them!
So God had prepared a simple way of dividing sheep from goats (Eze 34:17). Some would see and find the Christ, and others wouldn't, simply by measure of their understanding of the scriptures. And that's a lesson for us. We can draw near to Jesus by reading about him. This is the oil we shall put in our lamps so that when he comes we will recognise him as the Christ, our saviour, and be ready for him.

1. Then <5119> came <4334>(5736) to Jesus <2424> scribes <1122> and <2532> Pharisees <5330>, which were of <575> Jerusalem <2414>, saying <3004>(5723),
2. Why <1302> do thy <4675> disciples <3101> transgress <3845>(5719) the tradition <3862> of the elders <4245>? for <1063> they wash <3538>(5731) not <3756> their <848> hands <5495> when <3752> they eat <2068>(5725) bread <740>.
3. But <1161> he answered <611>(5679) and said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, Why <1302> do ye <5210> also <2532> transgress <3845>(5719) the commandment <1785> of God <2316> by <1223> your <5216> tradition <3862>?
4. For <1063> God <2316> commanded <1781>(5662), saying <3004>(5723), Honour <5091>(5720) thy <4675> father <3962> and <2532> mother <3384>: and <2532>, He that curseth <2551>(5723) father <3962> or <2228> mother <3384>, let him die <5053>(5720) the death <2288>.
5. But <1161> ye <5210> say <3004>(5719), Whosoever <3739> <302> shall say <2036>(5632) to his father <3962> or <2228> his mother <3384>, It is a gift <1435>, by <1537> whatsoever <3739> <1437> thou mightest be profited <5623>(5686) by me <1700>;
6. And <2532> honour <5091>(5661) not <3364> his <848> father <3962> or <2228> his <848> mother <3384>, he shall be free. Thus <2532> have ye made <208> <0> the commandment <1785> of God <2316> of none effect <208>(5656) by <1223> your <5216> tradition <3862>.
7. Ye hypocrites <5273>, well <2573> did <4395> <0> Esaias <2268> prophesy <4395>(5656) of <4012> you <5216>, saying <3004>(5723),
8. This <3778> people <2992> draweth nigh <1448>(5719) unto me <3427> with their <848> mouth <4750>, and <2532> honoureth <5091>(5719) me <3165> with their lips <5491>; but <1161> their <846> heart <2588> is <568>(5719) far <4206> from <575> me <1700>.
9. But <1161> in vain <3155> they do worship <4576>(5736) me <3165>, teaching <1321>(5723) for doctrines <1319> the commandments <1778> of men <444>.
10. And <2532> he called <4341>(5666) the multitude <3793>, and said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, Hear <191>(5720), and <2532> understand <4920>(5720):
11. Not <3756> that which goeth <1525>(5740) into <1519> the mouth <4750> defileth <2840>(5719) a man <444>; but <235> that which cometh <1607>(5740) out of <1537> the mouth <4750>, this <5124> defileth <2840>(5719) a man <444>.
12. Then <5119> came <4334>(5631) his <846> disciples <3101>, and said <2036>(5627) unto him <846>, Knowest thou <1492>(5758) that <3754> the Pharisees <5330> were offended <4624>(5681), after they heard <191>(5660) this saying <3056>?
13. But <1161> he answered <611>(5679) and said <2036>(5627), Every <3956> plant <5451>, which <3739> my <3450> heavenly <3770> Father <3962> hath <5452> <0> not <3756> planted <5452>(5656), shall be rooted up <1610>(5701).
14. Let <863> <0> them <846> alone <863>(5628): they be <1526>(5748) blind <5185> leaders <3595> of the blind <5185>. And <1161> if <1437> the blind <5185> lead <3594>(5725) the blind <5185>, both <297> shall fall <4098>(5699) into <1519> the ditch <999>.
15. Then <1161> answered <611>(5679) Peter <4074> and said <2036>(5627) unto him <846>, Declare <5419>(5657) unto us <2254> this <5026> parable <3850>.
16. And <1161> Jesus <2424> said <2036>(5627), Are <2075>(5748) ye <5210> also <2532> yet <188> without understanding <801>?
17. Do <3539> <0> not <3768> <0> ye <3539> <0> yet <3768> understand <3539>(5719), that <3754> whatsoever <3956> entereth in <1531>(5740) at <1519> the mouth <4750> goeth <5562>(5719) into <1519> the belly <2836>, and <2532> is cast out <1544>(5743) into <1519> the draught <856>?
18. But <1161> those things which <3588> proceed <1607>(5740) out of <1537> the mouth <4750> come forth <1831>(5736) from <1537> the heart <2588>; and they <2548> defile <2840>(5719) the man <444>.
19. For <1063> out of <1537> the heart <2588> proceed <1831>(5736) evil <4190> thoughts <1261>, murders <5408>, adulteries <3430>, fornications <4202>, thefts <2829>, false witness <5577>, blasphemies <988>:
20. These <5023> are <2076>(5748) the things which <3588> defile <2840>(5723) a man <444>: but <1161> to eat <5315>(5629) with unwashen <449> hands <5495> defileth <2840>(5719) not <3756> a man <444>.
21. Then <2532> Jesus <2424> went <1831>(5631) thence <1564>, and departed <402>(5656) into <1519> the coasts <3313> of Tyre <5184> and <2532> Sidon <4605>.
22. And <2532>, behold <2400>(5628), a woman <1135> of Canaan <5478> came <1831>(5631) out of <575> the same <1565> coasts <3725>, and cried <2905>(5656) unto him <846>, saying <3004>(5723), Have mercy <1653>(5657) on me <3165>, O Lord <2962>, thou Son <5207> of David <1138>; my <3450> daughter <2364> is grievously <2560> vexed with a devil <1139>(5736).
23. But <1161> he answered <611>(5662) her <846> not <3756> a word <3056>. And <2532> his <846> disciples <3101> came <4334>(5631) and besought <2065>(5707) him <846>, saying <3004>(5723), Send <630> <0> her <846> away <630>(5657); for <3754> she crieth <2896>(5719) after <3693> us <2257>.
24. But <1161> he answered <611>(5679) and said <2036>(5627), I am <649> <0> not <3756> sent <649>(5648) but <1508> unto <1519> the lost <622>(5756) sheep <4263> of the house <3624> of Israel <2474>.
25. Then <1161> came she <2064>(5631) and worshipped <4352>(5707) him <846>, saying <3004>(5723), Lord <2962>, help <997>(5720) me <3427>.
26. But <1161> he answered <611>(5679) and said <2036>(5627), It is <2076>(5748) not <3756> meet <2570> to take <2983>(5629) the children's <5043> bread <740>, and <2532> to cast <906>(5629) it to dogs <2952>.
27. And <1161> she said <2036>(5627), Truth <3483>, Lord <2962>: yet <2532> <1063> the dogs <2952> eat <2068>(5719) of <575> the crumbs <5589> which <3588> fall <4098>(5723) from <575> their <848> masters <2962>' table <5132>.
28. Then <5119> Jesus <2424> answered <611>(5679) and said <2036>(5627) unto her <846>, O <5599> woman <1135>, great <3173> is thy <4675> faith <4102>: be it <1096>(5676) unto thee <4671> even as <5613> thou wilt <2309>(5719). And <2532> her <846> daughter <2364> was made whole <2390>(5681) from <575> that very <1565> hour <5610>.
29. And <2532> Jesus <2424> departed <3327>(5631) from thence <1564>, and came <2064>(5627) nigh unto <3844> the sea <2281> of Galilee <1056>; and <2532> went up <305>(5631) into <1519> a mountain <3735>, and sat down <2521>(5711) there <1563>.
30. And <2532> great <4183> multitudes <3793> came <4334>(5656) unto him <846>, having <2192>(5723) with <3326> them those that were <1438> lame <5560>, blind <5185>, dumb <2974>, maimed <2948>, and <2532> many <4183> others <2087>, and <2532> cast <4496> <0> them <846> down <4496>(5656) at <3844> Jesus <2424>' feet <4228>; and <2532> he healed <2323>(5656) them <846>:
31. Insomuch that <5620> the multitude <3793> wondered <2296>(5658), when they saw <991>(5723) the dumb <2974> to speak <2980>(5723), the maimed <2948> to be whole <5199>, the lame <5560> to walk <4043>(5723), and <2532> the blind <5185> to see <991>(5723): and <2532> they glorified <1392>(5656) the God <2316> of Israel <2474>.
32. Then <1161> Jesus <2424> called <4341>(5666) his <848> disciples <3101> unto him, and said <2036>(5627), I have compassion <4697>(5736) on <1909> the multitude <3793>, because <3754> they continue <4357>(5719) with me <3427> now <2235> three <5140> days <2250>, and <2532> have <2192>(5719) nothing <3756> <5101> to eat <5315>(5632): and <2532> I will <2309>(5719) not <3756> send <630> <0> them <846> away <630>(5658) fasting <3523>, lest <3379> they faint <1590>(5686) in <1722> the way <3598>.
33. And <2532> his <846> disciples <3101> say <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, Whence <4159> should we <2254> have so much <5118> bread <740> in <1722> the wilderness <2047>, as <5620> to fill <5526>(5658) so great <5118> a multitude <3793>?
34. And <2532> Jesus <2424> saith <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, How many <4214> loaves <740> have ye <2192>(5719)? And <1161> they said <2036>(5627), Seven <2033>, and <2532> a few <3641> little fishes <2485>.
35. And <2532> he commanded <2753>(5656) the multitude <3793> to sit down <377>(5629) on <1909> the ground <1093>.
36. And <2532> he took <2983>(5631) the seven <2033> loaves <740> and <2532> the fishes <2486>, and gave thanks <2168>(5660), and brake <2806>(5656) them, and <2532> gave <1325>(5656) to his <848> disciples <3101>, and <1161> the disciples <3101> to the multitude <3793>.
37. And <2532> they did <5315> <0> all <3956> eat <5315>(5627), and <2532> were filled <5526>(5681): and <2532> they took up <142>(5656) of the broken <2801> meat that was left <4052>(5723) seven <2033> baskets <4711> full <4134>.
38. And <1161> they that did eat <2068>(5723) were <2258>(5713) four thousand <5070> men <435>, beside <5565> women <1135> and <2532> children <3813>.
39. And <2532> he sent away <630>(5660) the multitude <3793>, and took <1684>(5627) ship <1519> <4143>, and <2532> came <2064>(5627) into <1519> the coasts <3725> of Magdala <3093>.
