RIGHT TIME, RIGHT WAY
Two of David's sons became king in one day. Adonijah was the first. His method was to put himself forward with the help of some of the leading men of the kingdom, to become king. He chose to do it when his father, David, was old and weak. Adonijah had not been promised the kingdom, nor did he have the blessing of the LORD or of David. Adonijah's plan was to take the kingdom without having been given it, at an opportune time.
Solomon was the other son of David to be made king that day. Solomon was made king through the promise of both God and David. He became king at the time that was appropriate that he should take over the kingdom. Solomon also had the support of king David and the God fearing leaders of the land. Solomon did not have to take the kingdom, the kingdom was given to him at the right time.
There could not be two kings, and it was Solomon, the rightful king, who succeeded his father David. In the same way, we cannot force our way into the kingdom of God. There is only one way to be there, and that way is through Jesus. We will not get in by doing things our own way, or in our own time, by trickery or by force, instead we must be invited, called chosen, worthy and willing to act in the LORD's time and in his way.

1. Now king <4428> David <1732> was old <2204>(8804) and stricken <935>(8804) in years <3117>; and they covered <3680>(8762) him with clothes <899>, but he gat no heat <3179>(8799).
2. Wherefore his servants <5650> said <559>(8799) unto him, Let there be sought <1245>(8762) for my lord <113> the king <4428> a young <5291> virgin <1330>: and let her stand <5975>(8804) before <6440> the king <4428>, and let her cherish <5532>(8802) him, and let her lie <7901>(8804) in thy bosom <2436>, that my lord <113> the king <4428> may get heat <2552>(8804).
3. So they sought <1245>(8762) for a fair <3303> damsel <5291> throughout all the coasts <1366> of Israel <3478>, and found <4672>(8799) Abishag <49> a Shunammite <7767>, and brought <935>(8686) her to the king <4428>.
4. And the damsel <5291> was very <3966> fair <3303>, and cherished <5532>(8802) the king <4428>, and ministered <8334>(8762) to him: but the king <4428> knew <3045>(8804) her not.
5. Then Adonijah <138> the son <1121> of Haggith <2294> exalted <4984>(8693) himself, saying <559>(8800), I will be king <4427>(8799): and he prepared <6213>(8799) him chariots <7393> and horsemen <6571>, and fifty <2572> men <376> to run <7323>(8801) before <6440> him.
6. And his father <1> had not displeased <6087>(8804) him at any time <3117> in saying <559>(8800), Why hast thou done so <6213>(8804)? and he also was a very <3966> goodly <2896> <8389> man; and his mother bare <3205>(8804) him after <310> Absalom <53>.
7. And he conferred <1697> with Joab <3097> the son <1121> of Zeruiah <6870>, and with Abiathar <54> the priest <3548>: and they following <310> Adonijah <138> helped <5826>(8799) him.
8. But Zadok <6659> the priest <3548>, and Benaiah <1141> the son <1121> of Jehoiada <3077>, and Nathan <5416> the prophet <5030>, and Shimei <8096>, and Rei <7472>, and the mighty men <1368> which belonged to David <1732>, were not with Adonijah <138>.
9. And Adonijah <138> slew <2076>(8799) sheep <6629> and oxen <1241> and fat cattle <4806> by the stone <68> of Zoheleth <2120>, which is by <681> Enrogel <5883>, and called <7121>(8799) all his brethren <251> the king's <4428> sons <1121>, and all the men <582> of Judah <3063> the king's <4428> servants <5650>:
10. But Nathan <5416> the prophet <5030>, and Benaiah <1141>, and the mighty men <1368>, and Solomon <8010> his brother <251>, he called <7121>(8804) not.
11. Wherefore Nathan <5416> spake <559>(8799) unto Bathsheba <1339> the mother <517> of Solomon <8010>, saying <559>(8800), Hast thou not heard <8085>(8804) that Adonijah <138> the son <1121> of Haggith <2294> doth reign <4427>(8804), and David <1732> our lord <113> knoweth <3045>(8804) it not?
12. Now therefore come <3212>(8798), let me, I pray thee, give thee counsel <3289>(8799) <6098>, that thou mayest save <4422>(8761) thine own life <5315>, and the life <5315> of thy son <1121> Solomon <8010>.
13. Go <3212>(8798) and get thee in <935>(8798) unto king <4428> David <1732>, and say <559>(8804) unto him, Didst not thou, my lord <113>, O king <4428>, swear <7650>(8738) unto thine handmaid <519>, saying <559>(8800), Assuredly <3588> Solomon <8010> thy son <1121> shall reign <4427>(8799) after <310> me, and he shall sit <3427>(8799) upon my throne <3678>? why then doth Adonijah <138> reign <4427>(8804)?
14. Behold, while thou yet talkest <1696>(8764) there with the king <4428>, I also will come in <935>(8799) after <310> thee, and confirm <4390>(8765) thy words <1697>.
15. And Bathsheba <1339> went in <935>(8799) unto the king <4428> into the chamber <2315>: and the king <4428> was very <3966> old <2204>(8804); and Abishag <49> the Shunammite <7767> ministered <8334>(8764) unto the king <4428>.
16. And Bathsheba <1339> bowed <6915>(8799), and did obeisance <7812>(8691) unto the king <4428>. And the king <4428> said <559>(8799), What wouldest thou?
17. And she said <559>(8799) unto him, My lord <113>, thou swarest <7650>(8738) by the LORD <3068> thy God <430> unto thine handmaid <519>, saying, Assuredly Solomon <8010> thy son <1121> shall reign <4427>(8799) after <310> me, and he shall sit <3427>(8799) upon my throne <3678>.
18. And now, behold, Adonijah <138> reigneth <4427>(8804); and now, my lord <113> the king <4428>, thou knowest <3045>(8804) it not:
19. And he hath slain <2076>(8799) oxen <7794> and fat cattle <4806> and sheep <6629> in abundance <7230>, and hath called <7121>(8799) all the sons <1121> of the king <4428>, and Abiathar <54> the priest <3548>, and Joab <3097> the captain <8269> of the host <6635>: but Solomon <8010> thy servant <5650> hath he not called <7121>(8804).
20. And thou, my lord <113>, O king <4428>, the eyes <5869> of all Israel <3478> are upon thee, that thou shouldest tell <5046>(8687) them who shall sit <3427>(8799) on the throne <3678> of my lord <113> the king <4428> after <310> him.
21. Otherwise it shall come to pass, when my lord <113> the king <4428> shall sleep <7901>(8800) with his fathers <1>, that I and my son <1121> Solomon <8010> shall be counted offenders <2400>.
22. And, lo, while she yet talked <1696>(8764) with the king <4428>, Nathan <5416> the prophet <5030> also came in <935>(8804).
23. And they told <5046>(8686) the king <4428>, saying <559>(8800), Behold Nathan <5416> the prophet <5030>. And when he was come in <935>(8799) before <6440> the king <4428>, he bowed <7812>(8691) himself before the king <4428> with his face <639> to the ground <776>.
24. And Nathan <5416> said <559>(8799), My lord <113>, O king <4428>, hast thou said <559>(8804), Adonijah <138> shall reign <4427>(8799) after <310> me, and he shall sit <3427>(8799) upon my throne <3678>?
25. For he is gone down <3381>(8804) this day <3117>, and hath slain <2076>(8799) oxen <7794> and fat cattle <4806> and sheep <6629> in abundance <7230>, and hath called <7121>(8799) all the king's <4428> sons <1121>, and the captains <8269> of the host <6635>, and Abiathar <54> the priest <3548>; and, behold, they eat <398>(8802) and drink <8354>(8802) before <6440> him, and say <559>(8799), God save <2421>(8799) king <4428> Adonijah <138>.
26. But me, even me thy servant <5650>, and Zadok <6659> the priest <3548>, and Benaiah <1141> the son <1121> of Jehoiada <3077>, and thy servant <5650> Solomon <8010>, hath he not called <7121>(8804).
27. Is this thing <1697> done <1961>(8738) by my lord <113> the king <4428>, and thou hast not shewed <3045>(8689) it unto thy servant <5650>, who should sit <3427>(8799) on the throne <3678> of my lord <113> the king <4428> after <310> him?
28. Then king <4428> David <1732> answered <6030>(8799) and said <559>(8799), Call <7121>(8798) me Bathsheba <1339>. And she came <935>(8799) into the king's <4428> presence <6440>, and stood <5975>(8799) before <6440> the king <4428>.
29. And the king <4428> sware <7650>(8735), and said <559>(8799), As the LORD <3068> liveth <2416>, that hath redeemed <6299>(8804) my soul <5315> out of all distress <6869>,
30. Even as I sware <7650>(8738) unto thee by the LORD <3068> God <430> of Israel <3478>, saying <559>(8800), Assuredly Solomon <8010> thy son <1121> shall reign <4427>(8799) after <310> me, and he shall sit <3427>(8799) upon my throne <3678> in my stead; even so will I certainly do <6213>(8799) this day <3117>.
31. Then Bathsheba <1339> bowed <6915>(8799) with her face <639> to the earth <776>, and did reverence <7812>(8691) to the king <4428>, and said <559>(8799), Let my lord <113> king <4428> David <1732> live <2421>(8799) for ever <5769>.
32. And king <4428> David <1732> said <559>(8799), Call <7121>(8798) me Zadok <6659> the priest <3548>, and Nathan <5416> the prophet <5030>, and Benaiah <1141> the son <1121> of Jehoiada <3077>. And they came <935>(8799) before <6440> the king <4428>.
33. The king <4428> also said <559>(8799) unto them, Take <3947>(8798) with you the servants <5650> of your lord <113>, and cause Solomon <8010> my son <1121> to ride <7392>(8689) upon mine own mule <6506>, and bring him down <3381>(8689) to Gihon <1521>:
34. And let Zadok <6659> the priest <3548> and Nathan <5416> the prophet <5030> anoint <4886>(8804) him there king <4428> over Israel <3478>: and blow <8628>(8804) ye with the trumpet <7782>, and say <559>(8804), God save <2421>(8799) king <4428> Solomon <8010>.
35. Then ye shall come up <5927>(8804) after <310> him, that he may come <935>(8804) and sit <3427>(8804) upon my throne <3678>; for he shall be king <4427>(8799) in my stead: and I have appointed <6680>(8765) him to be ruler <5057> over Israel <3478> and over Judah <3063>.
36. And Benaiah <1141> the son <1121> of Jehoiada <3077> answered <6030>(8799) the king <4428>, and said <559>(8799), Amen <543>: the LORD <3068> God <430> of my lord <113> the king <4428> say <559>(8799) so too.
37. As the LORD <3068> hath been with my lord <113> the king <4428>, even so be he with Solomon <8010>, and make <1431> <0> his throne <3678> greater <1431>(8762) than the throne <3678> of my lord <113> king <4428> David <1732>.
38. So Zadok <6659> the priest <3548>, and Nathan <5416> the prophet <5030>, and Benaiah <1141> the son <1121> of Jehoiada <3077>, and the Cherethites <3774>, and the Pelethites <6432>, went down <3381>(8799), and caused Solomon <8010> to ride <7392>(8686) upon king <4428> David's <1732> mule <6506>, and brought <3212>(8686) him to Gihon <1521>.
39. And Zadok <6659> the priest <3548> took <3947>(8799) an horn <7161> of oil <8081> out of the tabernacle <168>, and anointed <4886>(8799) Solomon <8010>. And they blew <8628>(8799) the trumpet <7782>; and all the people <5971> said <559>(8799), God save <2421>(8799) king <4428> Solomon <8010>.
40. And all the people <5971> came up <5927>(8799) after <310> him, and the people <5971> piped <2490>(8764) with pipes <2485>, and rejoiced <8056> with great <1419> joy <8057>, so that the earth <776> rent <1234>(8735) with the sound <6963> of them.
41. And Adonijah <138> and all the guests <7121>(8803) that were with him heard <8085>(8799) it as they had made an end <3615>(8765) of eating <398>(8800). And when Joab <3097> heard <8085>(8799) the sound <6963> of the trumpet <7782>, he said <559>(8799), Wherefore is this noise <6963> of the city <7151> being in an uproar <1993>(8802)?
42. And while he yet spake <1696>(8764), behold, Jonathan <3129> the son <1121> of Abiathar <54> the priest <3548> came <935>(8804): and Adonijah <138> said <559>(8799) unto him, Come in <935>(8798); for thou art a valiant <2428> man <376>(8676) <381>, and bringest <1319> <0> good <2896> tidings <1319>(8762).
43. And Jonathan <3129> answered <6030>(8799) and said <559>(8799) to Adonijah <138>, Verily <61> our lord <113> king <4428> David <1732> hath made Solomon <8010> king <4427>(8689).
44. And the king <4428> hath sent <7971>(8799) with him Zadok <6659> the priest <3548>, and Nathan <5416> the prophet <5030>, and Benaiah <1141> the son <1121> of Jehoiada <3077>, and the Cherethites <3774>, and the Pelethites <6432>, and they have caused him to ride <7392>(8686) upon the king's <4428> mule <6506>:
45. And Zadok <6659> the priest <3548> and Nathan <5416> the prophet <5030> have anointed <4886>(8799) him king <4428> in Gihon <1521>: and they are come up <5927>(8799) from thence rejoicing <8056>, so that the city <7151> rang again <1949>(8735). This is the noise <6963> that ye have heard <8085>(8804).
46. And also Solomon <8010> sitteth <3427>(8804) on the throne <3678> of the kingdom <4410>.
47. And moreover the king's <4428> servants <5650> came <935>(8804) to bless <1288>(8763) our lord <113> king <4428> David <1732>, saying <559>(8800), God <430> make the name <8034> of Solomon <8010> better <3190>(8686) than thy name <8034>, and make <1431> <0> his throne <3678> greater <1431>(8762) than thy throne <3678>. And the king <4428> bowed <7812>(8691) himself upon the bed <4904>.
48. And also thus said <559>(8804) the king <4428>, Blessed <1288>(8803) be the LORD <3068> God <430> of Israel <3478>, which hath given <5414>(8804) one to sit <3427>(8802) on my throne <3678> this day <3117>, mine eyes <5869> even seeing <7200>(8802) it.
49. And all the guests <7121>(8803) that were with Adonijah <138> were afraid <2729>(8799), and rose up <6965>(8799), and went <3212>(8799) every man <376> his way <1870>.
50. And Adonijah <138> feared <3372>(8804) because <6440> of Solomon <8010>, and arose <6965>(8799), and went <3212>(8799), and caught hold <2388>(8686) on the horns <7161> of the altar <4196>.
51. And it was told <5046>(8714) Solomon <8010>, saying <559>(8800), Behold, Adonijah <138> feareth <3372>(8804) king <4428> Solomon <8010>: for, lo, he hath caught hold <270>(8804) on the horns <7161> of the altar <4196>, saying <559>(8800), Let king <4428> Solomon <8010> swear <7650>(8735) unto me to day <3117> that he will not slay <4191>(8686) his servant <5650> with the sword <2719>.
52. And Solomon <8010> said <559>(8799), If he will shew himself a worthy <2428> man <1121>, there shall not an hair <8185> of him fall <5307>(8799) to the earth <776>: but if wickedness <7451> shall be found <4672>(8735) in him, he shall die <4191>(8804).
53. So king <4428> Solomon <8010> sent <7971>(8799), and they brought him down <3381>(8686) from the altar <4196>. And he came <935>(8799) and bowed <7812>(8691) himself to king <4428> Solomon <8010>: and Solomon <8010> said <559>(8799) unto him, Go <3212>(8798) to thine house <1004>.
Notes that are not verse specific
27:13 ‘why will ye die ...’ is the stark and blunt question of the prophet. However the king and the people would not listen. This is, basically our message. We should be careful not to dilute, for fear of offending people, the message we preach.

WHO'S RIGHT?
There was quite a competition going on between Jeremiah and Hananiah. Both of them claimed to be prophets of the LORD. Both proclaimed their messages to the people of Israel. Yet they had vastly different things to say. Hananiah said that everything would come right in the next couple of years - Nebuchadnezzar would be a distant memory and the temple would be restored. But Jeremiah prophesied that things would get worse, and recommended that the people submit to God's plan for destruction.
The time came for their face off. Hananiah gave his prophecy of peace, while Jeremiah continued prophesying destruction. If I was Jeremiah I would have wanted to have done all I could to convince Hananiah that he was wrong, to make him recant and to agree with the message God had given me. But that wasn't what Jeremiah did. He stated his case firmly, set out God's guidelines for which prophet to believe, spoke a prophecy against Hananiah, and then he seems to have walked away.
Looking on we would have wondered who was right. But Jeremiah left it to God to shine truth into the hearts of the people. When Hananiah died two months later, they would have known which prophet spoke the truth.
Like Jeremiah, let's not get sucked into nasty debates, but state the truth, allow God to prove it and let Him open hearts to His message.

And it came to pass the same year <8141>, in the beginning <7225> of the reign <4467> of Zedekiah <6667> king <4428> of Judah <3063>, in the fourth <7243> year <8141>, and in the fifth <2549> month <2320>, that Hananiah <2608> the son <1121> of Azur <5809> the prophet <5030>, which was of Gibeon <1391>, spake <559>(8804) unto me in the house <1004> of the LORD <3068>, in the presence <5869> of the priests <3548> and of all the people <5971>, saying <559>(8800),
2. Thus speaketh <559>(8804) the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, the God <430> of Israel <3478>, saying <559>(8800), I have broken <7665>(8804) the yoke <5923> of the king <4428> of Babylon <894>.

5. Then the prophet <5030> Jeremiah <3414> said <559>(8799) unto the prophet <5030> Hananiah <2608> in the presence <5869> of the priests <3548>, and in the presence <5869> of all the people <5971> that stood <5975>(8802) in the house <1004> of the LORD <3068>,
6. Even the prophet <5030> Jeremiah <3414> said <559>(8799), Amen <543>: the LORD <3068> do <6213>(8799) so: the LORD <3068> perform <6965>(8686) thy words <1697> which thou hast prophesied <5012>(8738), to bring again <7725>(8687) the vessels <3627> of the LORD'S <3068> house <1004>, and all that is carried away captive <1473>, from Babylon <894> into this place <4725>.
7. Nevertheless hear <8085>(8798) thou now this word <1697> that I speak <1696>(8802) in thine ears <241>, and in the ears <241> of all the people <5971>;
8. The prophets <5030> that have been before <6440> me and before <6440> thee of old <5769> prophesied <5012>(8735) both against many <7227> countries <776>, and against great <1419> kingdoms <4467>, of war <4421>, and of evil <7451>, and of pestilence <1698>.
9. The prophet <5030> which prophesieth <5012>(8735) of peace <7965>, when the word <1697> of the prophet <5030> shall come to pass <935>(8800), then <227> shall the prophet <5030> be known <3045>(8735), that the LORD <3068> hath truly <571> sent <7971>(8804) him.
10. Then Hananiah <2608> the prophet <5030> took <3947>(8799) the yoke <4133> from off the prophet <5030> Jeremiah's <3414> neck <6677>, and brake <7665>(8799) it.
11. And Hananiah <2608> spake <559>(8799) in the presence <5869> of all the people <5971>, saying <559>(8800), Thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>; Even so will I break <7665>(8799) the yoke <5923> of Nebuchadnezzar <5019> king <4428> of Babylon <894> from the neck <6677> of all nations <1471> within the space of two full <3117> years <8141>. And the prophet <5030> Jeremiah <3414> went <3212>(8799) his way <1870>.
12. Then the word <1697> of the LORD <3068> came unto Jeremiah <3414> the prophet, after <310> that Hananiah <2608> the prophet <5030> had broken <7665>(8800) the yoke <4133> from off the neck <6677> of the prophet <5030> Jeremiah <3414>, saying <559>(8800),
13. Go <1980>(8800) and tell <559>(8804) Hananiah <2608>, saying <559>(8800), Thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>; Thou hast broken <7665>(8804) the yokes <4133> of wood <6086>; but thou shalt make <6213>(8804) for them yokes <4133> of iron <1270>.
14. For thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068> of hosts <6635>, the God <430> of Israel <3478>; I have put <5414>(8804) a yoke <5923> of iron <1270> upon the neck <6677> of all these nations <1471>, that they may serve <5647>(8800) Nebuchadnezzar <5019> king <4428> of Babylon <894>; and they shall serve <5647>(8804) him: and I have given <5414>(8804) him the beasts <2416> of the field <7704> also.
15. Then said <559>(8799) the prophet <5030> Jeremiah <3414> unto Hananiah <2608> the prophet <5030>, Hear <8085>(8798) now, Hananiah <2608>; The LORD <3068> hath not sent <7971>(8804) thee; but thou makest this people <5971> to trust <982>(8689) in a lie <8267>.
16. Therefore thus saith <559>(8804) the LORD <3068>; Behold, I will cast <7971>(8764) thee from off the face <6440> of the earth <127>: this year <8141> thou shalt die <4191>(8801), because thou hast taught <1696>(8765) rebellion <5627> against the LORD <3068>.
17. So Hananiah <2608> the prophet <5030> died <4191>(8799) the same year <8141> in the seventh <7637> month <2320>.

1. And <2532> again <3825> he entered <1525>(5627) into <1519> Capernaum <2584> after <1223> some days <2250>; and <2532> it was noised <191>(5681) that <3754> he was <2076>(5748) in <1519> the house <3624>.
2. And <2532> straightway <2112> many <4183> were gathered together <4863>(5681), insomuch that <5620> there was <5562> <0> no <3371> room to receive <5562>(5721) them, no, not so much <3366> as about <4314> the door <2374>: and <2532> he preached <2980>(5707) the word <3056> unto them <846>.
3. And <2532> they come <2064>(5736) unto <4314> him <846>, bringing <5342>(5723) one sick of the palsy <3885>, which was borne <142>(5746) of <5259> four <5064>.
4. And <2532> when they could <1410>(5740) not <3361> come nigh <4331>(5658) unto him <846> for <1223> the press <3793>, they uncovered <648>(5656) the roof <4721> where <3699> he was <2258>(5713): and <2532> when they had broken it up <1846>(5660), they let down <5465>(5719) the bed <2895> wherein <1909> <3739> the sick of the palsy <3885> lay <2621>(5711).
5. When <1161> Jesus <2424> saw <1492>(5631) their <846> faith <4102>, he said <3004>(5719) unto the sick of the palsy <3885>, Son <5043>, thy <4675> sins <266> be forgiven <863>(5769) thee <4671>.
6. But <1161> there were <2258>(5713) certain <5100> of the scribes <1122> sitting <2521>(5740) there <1563>, and <2532> reasoning <1260>(5740) in <1722> their <848> hearts <2588>,
7. Why <5101> doth <2980> <0> this <3778> man thus <3779> speak <2980>(5719) blasphemies <988>? who <5101> can <1410>(5736) forgive <863>(5721) sins <266> but <1508> God <2316> only <1520>?
8. And <2532> immediately <2112> when Jesus <2424> perceived <1921>(5631) in his <848> spirit <4151> that <3754> they so <3779> reasoned <1260>(5736) within <1722> themselves <1438>, he said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, Why <5101> reason ye <1260>(5736) these things <5023> in <1722> your <5216> hearts <2588>?
9. Whether <5101> is it <2076>(5748) easier <2123> to say <2036>(5629) to the sick of the palsy <3885>, Thy sins <266> be forgiven <863>(5769) thee <4671>; or <2228> to say <2036>(5629), Arise <1453>(5669), and <2532> take up <142>(5657) thy <4675> bed <2895>, and <2532> walk <4043>(5720)?
10. But <1161> that <2443> ye may know <1492>(5762) that <3754> the Son <5207> of man <444> hath <2192>(5719) power <1849> on <1909> earth <1093> to forgive <863>(5721) sins <266>, (he saith <3004>(5719) to the sick of the palsy <3885>,)
11. I say <3004>(5719) unto thee <4671>, Arise <1453>(5669), and <2532> take up <142>(5657) thy <4675> bed <2895>, and <2532> go thy way <5217>(5720) into <1519> thine <4675> house <3624>.
12. And <2532> immediately <2112> he arose <1453>(5681), took up <142>(5660) the bed <2895>, and <2532> went forth <1831>(5627) before <1726> them all <3956>; insomuch that <5620> they were <1839> <0> all <3956> amazed <1839>(5733), and <2532> glorified <1392>(5721) God <2316>, saying <3004>(5723), <3754> We <1492> <0> never <3763> saw <1492>(5627) it on this fashion <3779>.
13. And <2532> he went forth <1831>(5627) again <3825> by <3844> the sea side <2281>; and <2532> all <3956> the multitude <3793> resorted <2064>(5711) unto <4314> him <846>, and <2532> he taught <1321>(5707) them <846>.
14. And <2532> as he passed by <3855>(5723), he saw <1492>(5627) Levi <3018> the son of Alphaeus <256> sitting <2521>(5740) at <1909> the receipt of custom <5058>, and <2532> said <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, Follow <190>(5720) me <3427>. And <2532> he arose <450>(5631) and followed <190>(5656) him <846>.
15. And <2532> it came to pass <1096>(5633), that <1722>, as Jesus <846> sat at meat <2621>(5738) in <1722> his <846> house <3614>, many <4183> publicans <5057> and <2532> sinners <268> sat <4873> <0> also <2532> together with <4873>(5711) Jesus <2424> and <2532> his <846> disciples <3101>: for <1063> there were <2258>(5713) many <4183>, and <2532> they followed <190>(5656) him <846>.
16. And <2532> when the scribes <1122> and <2532> Pharisees <5330> saw <1492>(5631) him eat <2068>(5723) with <3326> publicans <5057> and <2532> sinners <268>, they said <3004>(5707) unto his <846> disciples <3101>, How <5101> is it that <3754> he eateth <2068>(5719) and <2532> drinketh <4095>(5719) with <3326> publicans <5057> and <2532> sinners <268>?
17. When <2532> Jesus <2424> heard <191>(5660) it, he saith <3004>(5719) unto them <846>, They that are whole <2480>(5723) have <2192>(5719) no <3756> need <5532> of the physician <2395>, but <235> they that are <2192>(5723) sick <2560>: I came <2064>(5627) not <3756> to call <2564>(5658) the righteous <1342>, but <235> sinners <268> to <1519> repentance <3341>.
18. And <2532> the disciples <3101> of John <2491> and <2532> of the Pharisees <5330> used <2258>(5713) to fast <3522>(5723): and <2532> they come <2064>(5736) and <2532> say <3004>(5719) unto him <846>, Why do <1302> <3522> <0> the disciples <3101> of John <2491> and <2532> of the Pharisees <5330> fast <3522>(5719), but <1161> thy <4674> disciples <3101> fast <3522>(5719) not <3756>?
19. And <2532> Jesus <2424> said <2036>(5627) unto them <846>, <3361> Can <1410>(5736) the children <5207> of the bridechamber <3567> fast <3522>(5721), while <1722> <3739> the bridegroom <3566> is <2076>(5748) with <3326> them <846>? as long as <3745> <5550> they have <2192>(5719) the bridegroom <3566> with <3326> them <1438>, they cannot <3756> <1410>(5736) fast <3522>(5721).
20. But <1161> the days <2250> will come <2064>(5695), when <3752> the bridegroom <3566> shall be taken away <522>(5686) from <575> them <846>, and <2532> then <5119> shall they fast <3522>(5692) in <1722> those <1565> days <2250>.
21. No man <3762> also <2532> seweth <1976>(5719) a piece <1915> of new <46> cloth <4470> on <1909> an old <3820> garment <2440>: else <1490> the new piece <2537> that filled it up <4138> taketh away <142>(5719) from <846> the old <3820>, and <2532> the rent <4978> is made <1096>(5736) worse <5501>.
22. And <2532> no man <3762> putteth <906>(5719) new <3501> wine <3631> into <1519> old <3820> bottles <779>: else <1490> the new <3501> wine <3631> doth burst <4486>(5719) the bottles <779>, and <2532> the wine <3631> is spilled <1632>(5743), and <2532> the bottles <779> will be marred <622>(5698): but <235> new <3501> wine <3631> must be put <992> into <1519> new <2537> bottles <779>.
23. And <2532> it came to pass <1096>(5633), that he went <3899>(5738) through <1223> the corn fields <4702> on <1722> the sabbath day <4521>; and <2532> his <846> disciples <3101> began <756>(5662), as they went <3598> <4160>(5721), to pluck <5089>(5723) the ears of corn <4719>.
24. And <2532> the Pharisees <5330> said <3004>(5707) unto him <846>, Behold <2396>, why <5101> do they <4160>(5719) on <1722> the sabbath day <4521> that which <3739> is <1832> <0> not <3756> lawful <1832>(5748)?
25. And <2532> he said <3004>(5707) unto them <846>, Have ye never <3763> read <314>(5627) what <5101> David <1138> did <4160>(5656), when <3753> he had <2192>(5627) need <5532>, and <2532> was an hungred <3983>(5656), he <846>, and <2532> they that were with <3326> him <846>?
26. How <4459> he went <1525>(5627) into <1519> the house <3624> of God <2316> in the days <1909> of Abiathar <8> the high priest <749>, and <2532> did eat <5315>(5627) the shewbread <740> <4286>, which <3739> is <1832> <0> not <3756> lawful <1832>(5748) to eat <5315>(5629) but for <1508> the priests <2409>, and <2532> gave <1325>(5656) also <2532> to them which were <5607>(5752) with <4862> him <846>?
27. And <2532> he said <3004>(5707) unto them <846>, The sabbath <4521> was made <1096>(5633) for <1223> man <444>, and not <3756> man <444> for <1223> the sabbath <4521>:
28. Therefore <5620> the Son <5207> of man <444> is <2076>(5748) Lord <2962> also <2532> of the sabbath <4521>.
